This song is so great, and personally I think its meaning is about a girl he never met, but dreamt of about and thought of constantly. It wasn't the kind of love he had for an actual person, but the idea of this strong love with one he never met. Kinda defines the word "Dreamgirl". (Dave Matthews)

Great song but incredibly confusing
My interpretation of this song is that the singer was in a relationship with someone whom he loved very dearly, but she no longer loved him back. As shes 'walking' away from him he is thinking to himself that she might have been the one, yet from some of the things he says it sounds as if he is letting her go. He's upset that he can't be with her anymore, but in the end hes just happy to have met her and to have loved her at all.
Well thats just what I think anyways. But this song is amazing and it pretty much sums up how i feel about the recent breakup between my ex-girlfriend and I a month and a half ago. We dated for two years and I thought she was the one, but I guess not :(
I think its a song about a girl and him that were always in the friend zone. They wanted to be more and tried it, it didn't work. The time they had together was great (for some reason it couldn't work). They no longer worked as friends and they didnt work as more then friends. He understood that. But he is glad that they tried. He misses their friendship and wants to see her again because he is still in love with her and this song is a way of telling her that he will always be there for her.
I think this song is about someone very close to him dying. Whichwouldbe why he said "I must wake up from my sleep". Whoever died cannot wake up, and they can't hear him (as he mentions in the song).
