Q&A
The Right Place Lyrics
Plead with me and beg me not to stay,
So you can still get stoned every day.
Ask of me the one thing I'll negate,
So I'll look like a jerk and you'll be safe.
Oh, I once said 'good night' and meant every single syllable,
but I didn't mean to have one every day (by the way).
Even though your heart's in the right place,
You'll find a way to lose and let it break.
There is only so much I can take,
Until I start to feel like I'm betrayed.
Oh, I once said 'good luck' and really hoped that it'd work out,
And felt certain that this time you'd get it right.
But I've since been dismayed by your careless mistakes,
And I'm sick and tired of hoping that you might.
Yeah.
Plead with me and beg me not to stay.
You knew it'd never work out anyway.
You've got an eye for sore sight and a knack for college tries,
But you're soon to lack the thing that gets you by.
Yeah!
So you can still get stoned every day.
Ask of me the one thing I'll negate,
So I'll look like a jerk and you'll be safe.
but I didn't mean to have one every day (by the way).

What confuses me about this song is "Plead with me and beg me not to stay" rather than begging someone to say, the person is being begged to leave. That doesn't sound like something that happens in a relationship, because the other person could just leave. I then wonder if this is about the singer taking care of someone else, maybe a sibling or a friend- "So you can still get stoned everyday" As long as the singer is there, they take care of the person and force them to stay on track/make something of their life. So that person "begs them not to stay" so they can just give up. The singer is then discouraged, saying:
Oh, I once said 'good luck' and really hoped that it'd work out, And felt certain that this time you'd get it right. But I've since been dismayed by your careless mistakes, And I'm sick and tired of hoping that you might.
They're tired of being invested in this person's well-being when they clearly don't care and still make mistakes or destructive decisions.
That's just my take on it. I could be wrong.
Interesting, loveAZ! As far as the story that the lyrics tell, it's kinda like "The Jeopardy of Contentment," part 2, so it could be a romantic relationship -- but the family relationship definitely makes as much (if not more) sense.
