Dylan Lyrics
I pray for rain because I'm trying
To find god and make him cry,
Because I'm dying in a fire beneath my covers.
And somewhere out across the way,
You ask for salt across a plate,
And you can't find a word to say
To your own brother.
And you could call me over now,
And we could fix this with our mouths,
But you don't buy the farm,
If you can't afford the cow.
And you say Dylan is a sentiment
That you don't want to share,
And you say you looked back in anger
And it rose to meet your stare,
And you say I am not the one
Who puts the bullet to your gun
And makes it flare.
And you say Dylan is a sentiment to you,
And you don't want to share.
You say you're looking for the truth,
Like you got rifles in your books,
But up above your parents' roof
I saw no star tonight,
Only the black from whence you came,
And where they'll send you back again,
And no blue plaque will keep your name
From falling out of sight.
And you can wage this war of one,
And I am still the only one
Who will remember you when you are gone.
And you say Dylan is a sentiment
That you don't want to share,
And you say you looked back in anger
And it rose to meet your stare,
And you say I am not the one
Who puts the bullet to your gun
And makes it flare.
And you say Dylan is a sentiment to you,
And you don't want to share.
Oh and all the things you talk about
But never say to me,
And all the things to talk about
That I could say to you,
Like reading an Italian book
From the 13th century,
Is not that hard to do.
And I am not the kind
Who puts their toe against the line
And makes it tear,
But this could be the thing
That puts the blood into your skin
And keeps it there.
And you say Dylan is a sentiment
That no one else will ever understand.
And you say Dylan is a sentiment to you,
But you are only just a man.
To find god and make him cry,
Because I'm dying in a fire beneath my covers.
And somewhere out across the way,
You ask for salt across a plate,
And you can't find a word to say
To your own brother.
And we could fix this with our mouths,
But you don't buy the farm,
If you can't afford the cow.
That you don't want to share,
And you say you looked back in anger
And it rose to meet your stare,

Bob Dylan?
Another reference to Dylan is the line about the "Italian book from the thirteenth century." He sings of the same thing in "Tangled Up In Blue"
I also definitely think it's about a guy who's searching for meaning to life in the wrong places, not in human connections but just in forms of art. I personally think it's a natural reflex on account of the amount of idiots on the planet.
this is such a great song! it's about a guy who is a hipster/snob who takes himself really seriously and thinks he's too cool to have a genuine connection with the girl who likes him. even though he probably likes her and they could have a meaningful connection, he just alienates her by making a big deal out of how smart he supposedly is. I think Dylan is definitely Bob Dylan, this guy is the kind of guy who calls Dylan by his last name and acts like he's the only person who listens to him.
For me, this is another of Emmy's songs about her brother, and his fictional/real? suicide. "Edward Is Dedward", "Bad Things Coming" and "Absentee". It seems as the younger sister, she's watching her older brother become a distant moody teenager with an enthusiasm for Bob Dylan and going through a difficult teen angst stage, using Bob Dylan as his musical role model. He alienates Emmy by attempting to be cool or because he's dissatisfied with his life.
I personally love Bob Dylan and Emmy the Great. I love the first two lines: "I pray for rain because I'm trying/To find God and make him cry" and "Like reading an Italian book from the thirteenth century is not that hard to do" because of the way it sounds and the syncopation.
