Fez - Being Born Lyrics

Six o'clock
On the autoroute
Burning rubber, burning chrome
Bay of Cadiz and ferry home
Atlantic sea cut glass
African sun at last

Lights flash past
Like memories
A speeding head, a speeding heart
I'm being born, a bleeding start
The engines roar, blood curling wail
Head first then foot
Then heart sets sail

I'm pretty sure the song's about dying and being reborn. Or the whole "one person dies, another is born" shebang. Think about it:

Lights flash past like memories: Life flashing before one's eyes... The engines roar, blood curling wail: At the same time the car hits, the baby begins to cry... First head then foot then heart sets sail: The baby is born.

Yes/No?

Actually I read your posts, and I just HAVE to argue.

I'm not a Bible scholar. I'm not Christian. (Jewish, if you will.) But there are never demons telling you that you're going to die in a car crash. Inner demons, yes. But those inner demons, in my belief, are caused by the person believing the bad thought himself. And in my opinion, these inner demons usually show up when there's nothing to look forward to. What needs to happen is nothing to do with God or the Bible. That person needs to pick himself up and look for something...

"Head first then foot Then heart sets sail"

This line, like most U2 lines can be interpreted as two things:

1) An actual birth of a child - Head then body then feet out of the womb. Heart is the mothers love for the child and vise/versa.

2) As is in the Anton Corbijn film, perhaps when we see someonewe like our 'mind starts to wander' and then we walk over and then start a relationship of love.

Maybe...

I like this one! I think it's about having a "realization" wile on a road trip. I think it also refers to U2's recording sessions for NLOTH when they had some sessions in Fez, Morocco.

This song is really good, though. I just heard it for the first time a few minutes ago.

This is a great song. To me, the accident in this song isn't literal. I think it's about becoming a new person through the pain and hard times that come through life.

I think it is a beautiful one. With the mentioning of the Bay of Cadiz (which is the part of Spain only a few miles from Morocco), this song seems to be talking about a trip being made over the narrow strait to Africa. Knowing Bono's close work with that continent, it could be speaking of his own personal experience. Or, could he be writing from the perspective of someone else who is taking the "ferry home?" With those last few lines, it sounds like the writer is allegorizing the experience of the trip. It seems like someone is being born again by making a metaphorical voyage. This voyage has something to do with Africa and it is going to be a difficult and painful one.

Oh, and Fez is a city in Morocco, which seems to be the destination of the traveler. It is ancient city that has gone relatively unchanged in modern times.

After reading Rolling Stone article, I see it as being born in a physical sense....the album that is.

The experience leading to the re-birth of their soul in an artistic sense.

This song feels like a celebration of the birth, and a glimse into the journey.

I feel it should have been the first track, as originally planned.
