I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight Lyrics
She's a rainbow and she loves the peaceful life
Knows I'll go crazy if I don't go crazy tonight
There's a part of me in the chaos that's quiet
And there's a part of you that wants me to riot
Everybody needs to cry or needs to spit
Every sweet tooth needs just a little hit
Every beauty needs to go out with an idiot
How can you stand next to the truth and not see it?
A change of heart comes slow
It's not a hill, it's a mountain
As you start out the climb
Do you believe me, or are you doubting
We're gonna make it all the way to the light
But I know I'll go crazy if I don't go crazy tonight
Every generation gets a chance to change the world
Pity the nation that won't listen to your boys and girls
'Cos the sweetest melody is the one we haven't heard
Is it true that perfect love drives out all fear?
The right to appear ridiculous is something I hold dear
Oh, but a change of heart comes slow
It's not a hill, it's a mountain
As you start out the climb
Listen for me, I'll be shouting
We're gonna make it all the way to the light
But I know I'll go crazy if I don't go crazy tonight
Baby, baby, baby, I know I'm not alone
Baby, baby, baby, I know I'm not alone
It's not a hill, it's a mountain
As we start out the climb
Listen for me, I'll be shouting
Shouting to the darkness, squeeze out sparks of light
You know we'll go crazy
You know we'll go crazy
You know we'll go crazy if we don't go crazy tonight
Oh oh
Slowly now
Oh oh
Knows I'll go crazy if I don't go crazy tonight
There's a part of me in the chaos that's quiet

Every sweet tooth needs just a little hit

This is lovely! Great lyrics! I think it's about the frustration Bono feels of the current state of politics.
Easily one of the best U2 songs and is very underrated.

The chorus is about self-determination and letting loose in life, which are two things that should go hand-in-hand. Anyone who has ever backpacked in the mountains can identify with this.

"...the sweetest melody is the one we haven't heard.." = keep experiencing new things in life.

This song's about partying? Heck no, not if you take everything into account.
It's not a hill,it's a mountain as you start out the climb. Every task and adventure worth embarking on seems like a mountain as you begin it. This song is about making a positive change, either in your own personal life or in the world. "Listen for me, I'll be shouting." Bono's saying to listen for him, because no matter what, he's going to get to the top of that peak, and he's going to be shouting for joy when he does it: "shouting to the darkness, squeeze out sparks of light."
This song is classic U2. A positive message encouraging the listener to stand firm in the face of adversity. "I'll go crazy if I don't go crazy tonight." I'm going to go mad if I don't start doing something about it now. It's about hope.
This song was definitely the best off the new album. Great melodies with an anthemic chorus and a deep meaning behind each line.
The overall theme I get seems kind of similar to "Stuck in a Moment" from All You Can't Leave Behind. I imagine this as something somebody would say to a friend in a time of hardship.
The first verse is all about an idea I've been coming to terms with, that life isn't really complete without both happiness and sadness. "Everybody needs to cry or needs to spit/ Every sweet-tooth needs just a little hit/ Every beauty needs to go out with an idiot," seems like its about human emotion, and that we need it all. Sadness, anger, happiness, and heartbreak. Its all part of life.
The second verse seems to be punctuated best by the line "The right to be ridiculous is something I hold dear." The verse promotes being spontaneous and possibly naive in some ways as the references in the first two lines toward teenagers suggests.
And the Choruses give the message "things are gonna be tough, but lets just have the best time we can with it." The first two lines obviously hold the meaning that theres hardship around us now and ahead. But the line "But we're gonna make it all the way to the light," gives that kind of reassurance that reminds me of Stuck in a Moment that everything will be alright. The three lines that change each hold a meaning that goes along with the verse beforehand. The first is a call to listen up to whoever's been hurting, the second is a statement that he's been going on and being spontaneous despite opposition and the third is an overall message lets make the best we can and have a good time. Personally that third line, "Let's shout until the darkness, squeeze out sparks of light," is my favorite of the song.
MRoCkEd,
I'm not sure if Bono literally wrote the song about Fordham, or if he was just playing to the local crowd... I am leaning towards the latter.
Beautiful lyrics, lovely song. I don't know what it means, but it's a great song.
i guess its self explanatory.... ill go crazy if i dont go crazy tonight... more like i will go berserk if i dont go crazy with all that is goin on tonight.... well go crazy as in th eperspective of others if we dont go crazy in our own perspective..a classic case of us against them
According to Bono himself, this song was written for and about the Fordham University campus, particularly Friday nights at Fordham. Source: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hKARCd_llO4
I think he was saying that as a joke since that's where they were performing, my friend. :)

I agree with suede, it's about frustration with current political situation in the world. It's not a hill, it's a mountain... there is a lot to be done, but we have to get started, and we'll get more people to join us as we go along, and I'll go crazy if I don't do something, anything about it!
Thank you!
Thank you!
Personally, this song to me is about the current state of global politics, as well as sticking to your guns and being happy. Make sense?
This song is a great metaphor for the fact that the things that are worth attaining, are also the hardest to earn. To make any real progress, and to realize the significance of your goal, you have to experience difficulty.
This is pretty much what it is. You can all say it's about partying because Bono made a joke but, "It's not a hill it's a mountain as you start out the climb" what in the blue blazes does that have to do with partying? If you take everything so literally from the source of where it came I'd hate to see how you decide on who you're voting for come election day. Thank you seamoraine for making sense.
