Innocent Man Lyrics
How long, how long are you asking me to stay?
I cannot stand to watch you kneel today
I saw your hope and turned my face away from you
But under her skirt I see the nation's pain
All kicked with dirt, she crossed her legs in shame
How can you hurt a man who knows your name?
It's true
I cannot, I cannot kill an innocent
I will not, I will not put the gun in my
I cannot, I cannot kill an innocent man
I cannot, I cannot kill an innocent
I will not, I will not put the gun in my
I cannot, I cannot kill an innocent man
You sit down, you sit down, you sit down, you sit down, you sit down
I watched her fall into the ground
How wrong, how wrong it is to let us guess which god is real?
Which faith would suit us best?
Oh god of pete's, quit trying to impress
Are you alive?
Why?
I cannot, I cannot kill an innocent
I will not, I will not put the gun in my
I cannot, I cannot kill an innocent man
You sit down, you sit down, you sit down, you sit down, you sit down
I watched her fall into the ground
If you say, I believe it now, what we got we gave away
Holy god, that we have failed
We killed your carpenter with nails
In the end, when the fire comes burning up the souls we spend
Is it worth what we have paid?
I cannot, I cannot kill an innocent
I will not, I will not put the gun in my
I cannot, I cannot kill an innocent man
I cannot, I cannot kill an innocent
I will not, I will not put the gun in my
I cannot, I cannot kill an innocent man
You sit down...
I cannot stand to watch you kneel today
I saw your hope and turned my face away from you
All kicked with dirt, she crossed her legs in shame
How can you hurt a man who knows your name?
It's true
I will not, I will not put the gun in my

eleanor of aquitaine: led troops to the Crusade and accompanied them, which makes sense considering this song is about Jesus & Christianity and innocence. In the Atlast this makes sense because it refers to the blood in the ground (soldiers), it fits for other reasons but thats a whole other matter. i think this makse the most sense in the context of the two songs. eleanor literally put the guns in these mens hands to gain back the Holy Land.
I think this song is questioning faith in general and if we would or should have faith in Jesus and what he did.
Love like Pi makes a lot of references to Jesus, Christianity, and the question of faith in their music, which is why I am in love with them.
this song talks about faith and innocence in today's society. The innocent man is Jesus, and she is praying to him (kneeling) but the man who is the speaker in this poem has turned away from her hope and faith. he questions why he is alive, and how can he accept Jesus as his savior when he cannot "kill an innocent" which is what happened to Jesus - he was an innocent who was crucified for his beliefs.
talking about her skirt and all of that - referring to her loss of innocence. thats the problem with today's society - we are all lost and confused and the "nation's pain" is its loss of innocence and complete lack of faith. he says we have failed our God because of this lack of faith, this lack of innocence in today's society. "would we have paid" is questioning if we would have died for every one else's sins just as Jesus did.
Yeah I've noticed that they do refer a lot to Jesus "you killed your carpenter with nails"

what@peaches1234 Wtf? this song is about a guy and a girl she is down on her knees clearly for sexual reasons in reference to a situation of temptation. Clearly the man is in a position of power over the girl as he states with the gun reference. It's not an actual gun it's a symbol of power to get her to perform sexual acts because she's a promiscuous person as stated by him saying he can see under skirt the nations pain all caked with dirt... but he realizes his power over her and doesn't want to destroy his innocence......

I mean from the first line it's understandable that it's a girl guy situations where the girl always wants the guy who she idolizes to stay... I wouldn't be surprised if it's an actual personal point of view from one of the band members... if you ever been in a band a good one, or messed around with females you'd know that girls throw themselves at band members, and that's probably what he is talking about, the 'nations pain' as a reference to the state of mind of the majority's lack of self esteem seeking acceptance, So overall it's about temptation, sin, idolization, innocence, and sexuality... With a lil Jesus spice thrown in to the mix for good fun.
oh. my. goodness. seriously if you wanna know lyrics from a band... try this... GOING TO THEIR WEBSITE FIRST! look a love like pi up. the lyrics to this song are there!

Oh my god, YES! I was JUST about to do the same thing. People are so dense sometimes. I went to the OFFICIAL website and I was like, "Jeeez, how do people not think to do this?" Effing RE-TARD-ED. That being said, Yes, it's Eleanor, which makes sense BECAUSE this is supposed to be a STORY CD, meaning that each of the songs equals one whole story from beginning to end. Hasn't anyone ever heard of a theme CD before? Sheesh.

Furthermore, if I see ONE MORE PERSON write "All kicked with dirt" in the beginning verses, I'm...
Furthermore, if I see ONE MORE PERSON write "All kicked with dirt" in the beginning verses, I'm going to cry at the stupidity of man. How the fuck does "kicked with dirt" even make ANY sense? AT ALL? That's not a sentence, that's random fucking words. Hasn't ANYONE heard of being "caked with dirt"? as in, "COVERED IN DIRT"....makes a shit-ton more sense. I mean damn, I got 95% of the lyrics right just by hearing this song by ear...I don't know how all the rest of you hear all this crazy crap you hear.
Rant over...
Maybe not exactly 100% correct but much better than the ones originally posted...

I cannot, I cannot kill an innocent I will not, I will not put the gun in my I cannot, I cannot kill an innocent man
Just sit down, sit down, sit down, sit down, sit down I watched her fall into the ground
If you say, I believe it now, what we got we gave away Holy god, that we have failed We killed your carpenter with nails In the end, when the fire comes burning up the souls we spend Is there words? Would we have paid?
I cannot, I cannot kill an innocent I will not, I will not put the gun in my I cannot, I cannot kill an innocent man I cannot, I cannot kill an innocent I will not, I will not put the gun in my I cannot, I cannot kill an innocent man
Just sit down...
"In the end, when the fire comes burning up the souls we spend Is there words? Would we have paid?"
I think the 'Is there words...' part sounds more like: "Is it worth what we have paid?" which makes more sense to me because they're talking of spending souls and they're questioning if their actions would be worth it in the end.
the "i will not, i will not put the gun in my" part makes more sense than "eleanor, eleanor"....but in the previous song "The Atlas" on the cd it ends with a man talking to a lady named "eleanor" so i guess that just carried over when i was working on these lyrics...hopefully the cd release has the lyrics on the 24th..
i think that fedorov1fan and colinkeany are both right.
I cannot, I cannot kill an innocent Eleanor , I will not put the gun in my hand.
i dont know really....i mean there has to be some link to the first songs mention of an Eleanor. I wish they would have put the lyrics in the cd case!!!!!!
well i am new to this site but i will tell u that u need to change the lyrics from i will not to Eleanor. the reason i kno this is because i saw the singer, lief, at a meet and greet at the monmouth mall in nj and i asked what it was and he said "it is Eleanor Eleanor...what was the other lyrics you said?" me: "i will not i will not" lief: "nope its Eleanor Eleanor, u hear it straight from the horse's mouth". i hate to seem bossy but please just change it
