Augustine Lyrics
oh my god
what have I done
chasing some mirage in my Mojave sun
don't say every chance is lost,
please don't say anything at all
in sand and thorns
I'm walking forth
bare and blinking as the day that I was born
bells in spires of China white
ring for an Augustine tonight
oh now, I'm breaking down
oh let me be
let me be your Augustine
lead me now
I understand
faith is both the prison and the open hand
bells on low on high
will you ring for Augustine tonight
oh now I'm breaking down,
every illusion in between
all the lies that I have seen
oh let me be your Augustine
what have I done
chasing some mirage in my Mojave sun
don't say every chance is lost,
please don't say anything at all
I'm walking forth
bare and blinking as the day that I was born
bells in spires of China white
ring for an Augustine tonight
oh let me be
let me be your Augustine
I understand
faith is both the prison and the open hand
bells on low on high
will you ring for Augustine tonight
every illusion in between
all the lies that I have seen
oh let me be your Augustine

this song says something of lost chances and never being able to go back again. I can't quite interperet it any other way. It seems really sad.
Before she sang this at a Nashville concert, Vienna said, "This is for the religious experience I haven't had yet." I was so happy to hear that description of this song, because it so perfectly captures this song for me. It is about faith, and the desperate desire to be faithful, to be loved in the arms of the one you find most holy. It is the most beautiful song I've ever heard, and it stirs such a deep desire in me for grace.
As much as I absolutely love her to pieces, I can't listen to this song. St. Augustine was one of the first Christian proponents of the "Just War Theory," which is basically what it sounds like - religious justification of killing other people in wars. A lot of religions have had prominent figures who theorized this, but St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas were the notable ones in Christianity's history.
Based on how sensitive and thoughtful Vienna is about so many different issues in her songs, I certainly don't think she had any ill intention with this one - Augustine's role just seems to be something that's not really talked about much or well-known. I only found out completely by accident.
