The Prayer

Great song... what I got out of this song is the rapper Kid Cudi reflecting on his life and success. Cudi realizes that he is not a mainstream rapper and he might never be. This is supported during the part about the "apple bottom jeans and boots with the fur", a potential jab at Flo Rida for commericializing rap. The chorus to me represents that Cudi is ready for a symbolic funeral, that is the death of his mainstream career. At the end of the song, I don't know if anyone notices it but the riff and beat from "Day n Night" starts playing. What is interesting about this song is that it recieved a very limited release yet it is widely heard and extremely popular. To me, this shows that Cudi is in to express himself and he does not care if no one remembers him if he dies. However at the end, when "day n Night" starts, it seems to befrom the perspective of a true fan. After Cudi is gone, he will be remembered by those who appreciate him and his music, he will be remembered for more than just a song about material wealth Cough flo rida cought

I think this song is much deeper than PuppyKilling's "mainstream" analysis, even tho i do agree to a certain extent. To me, Cudi is having a talk with God on this track, with the allusion to the 'bedtime prayer' [if i die before i wake] in the chorus. Also, the with the title of the song as "The Prayer," i think he intended this song to be like he was praying to God.

"My heart thump not from being nervous Sometimes, I'm thinking God made me special here on purpose"

sometimes he may lose his faith in god, then he may realize that "God made him special" and ask for forgiveness for his wrong actions - "demons i confronted"

"If I slip away, if I die today the last thing you remember won't Be about some apple bottom jeans with the boots with the fur"

Now, he knows to make his words important, and stray from the mainstream pop songs - "apple bottom jeans," so when he dies, on judgement day, the last thing "you" - referring to god- remember wont be about that, but rather something more meaningful, like this song itself.

"But please don't cry, just know that I have made these songs for you And if I die before I wake I pray the lord my soul to take 'Cuz I'm ready for a funeral"

Cudi prays to the Lord that his "soul will take," or go to heaven, but if he doesnt, he wants God to know that he made these songs for him. He is now confident that he has done enough and is ready to die - "ready for the funeral"

This is how i understood the song when i first heard it, and i believe its one of the more meaningful songs out there.

one thing i would change about it though is i think hes talking to God only in his chorus and the parts where he specifically says god in his verses.

in his verses hes talking to us (the listeners of the song)

and the apple bottom jeans part when he talk about "you" hes talking about God and us. dsyl talks about the part referring to God but i think hes also talking about that "WE'LL" remember him cuz he made some cool commercialized song but that we'll remember him cuz his songs were REAL..

No one can understand this song unless you are up on the moon with him. some people will just never understand only ones can relate are on the moon. no one understands how real this shit is.

There are many different thoughts and feelings you get by listening to this song and truly understanding the lyrics of the artist of the song. Kid Cudi really has some strong words in his lyrics that have a lot of meaning behind them. In the first part of the song, he explains how he thinks God has a special place on earth for him on purpose and that his heart is thumping not because of being nervous, but because of the joy he has of being here (on earth). He says how he will be making all of his words important until the day he dies. In the next line he talks about "the last thing" we "will remember wont be about apple bottom jeans with the boots with the fur" as that used to be a trend that was fairly popular. He is trying to say that all of the important people in your life and important events are the only thing that you will be remembering as you are leaving this earth. He then mentions how he wanted to be free since the day that he was born and I think that has some significance to the freedom of our country and what it stands for compared to other countries and their situations. The demons confronted him but he says that they will disperse and not bother him again since he is free. He wouldn't have to worry about them again. This is my general interpretation of the first verse. It has a lot of meaning behind it if you really listen and try to understand the lyrics as they are placed in this song. It may mean different things to different people but in the end it people get the same general idea.

Great song. I agree with what Puppy said but I might add that the beat from "Day n Night" playing towards the end is that they'll probably play it at his funeral. If there was a music video for this I can imagine a view of a group all wearing black carrying his casket when that part of the song begins to play.

Although you could interpret the day n night beat playing at the end as symbolic, it is actually because the Prayer was off of his mixtape. Mixtapes often blend together beats from the following song so the transition is smooth and without interruption. On this mixtape, Cudi utilizes this a lot like in the end of 'Save My Soul' and 'T.G.I.F.', where the next songs' beats are cross faded.

The first song I heard was Day N Nite. Then I heard this one and it is awesome. The best part is that half of the music is from The Funeral by Band of Horses which is another song I love.
