I think this can applied towards any relationship. (That's actually one thing I love about ADTR. Their songs allow you to drift and think of your own meaning for the song.) This can be someone in the military, away at school, traveling for a job, touring (in this case), etc...

i figured it relates more to the touring....because hes saying that he cant come home til everybody is singing lalala meaning until he gains fans and they are all singing lalala he cant come home....i personally dont c how that relates to the military or anything of the sort....

tkj-- My first thought when I heard this song was that it was related to the military, honestly. If you think about it, you can kinda relate it the La's meaning peace... They can't come home until the war is over and there is peace. Then again, it could just be me.

I always thought of it as the military when i heard it. And the la la la's made me think of happiness. And I always thought he was saying until the war's over and everyone is happy. In other words, until the job is done.

I'm quite new to ADTR, but I've caught that theme of being able to drift. Alot of bands have specific meanings attached to their songs, but this band is different. For me, this song is a romantic one about seperation and the guy finally coming home to his girl in the end. It reminds me of situation with my boyfriend. He's gone alot, but I'm always waiting for him, and its fabulous when he does come home. :)

Pretty straightforward song. Here's my (kinda detailed) view on it:

I probably feel this way simply because it applies to my life, but it reminds me of going off to college. You leave behind the one special person, swearing you will be back soon and often. However, as time goes on, coming home isn't as simple as you thought it would be. It sounds to me like she is saying I can't continue to watch you leave, and I can't continue to dream of you being here next to me.
It feels like a few days after a huge fight and the night before he's coming home when she suddenly realized she can't do this any more. Life is taking them in two separate directions, no matter how badly they just want to be together. He swears he can't go on without her and realizes they could never just be friends, but she has herself to take care of and enough faith in him to know that he will be okay.

His parents talked him out of our relationship by telling him I would be likely to cheat on him. So when he left I was crushed because he's the first boy that I dated that I FELL for. However, I moved on.. Then, January of this year, after months of NO communication, he came...

I lost faith that he would stay because of not being able to see each other, so I left. Now.. We're together & dealing with things keeping us apart by gaining friends who help us see each other.. They're singing la la la, and we're competing against the world around us to be together.. So I imagine that the song is about him leaving many times & coming back, which only makes it harder for her to see him leave.. So she loses faith & leaves. Yet, with EVERYONE around them singing la la la, she's probably going to realize she still loves him & that he's back for good, so her faith will come back. We just don't know if the end of the song is the permanent end... Or if there's more to the story that we don't get to hear because it gives us a sense of wonder & makes us able to apply it to our own life's this way.
So in a way.. We write the end of the story that this song plays out.

To me this song's another one about touring. Girlfriend back home, can't take the touring lifestyle of her boyfriend, Breaks up with him etc.
this song was able to keep me and my girlfriend together because it made us realize that our relationship was important. And i'm still with her! that's the best part.
