Dirt Room Lyrics
I'm like a ghost
I'll be living in a dirt room
Waiting for the day to be close
To the window when you're home
I'll be standing by your back door
Reaching for the knife in my coat
I'm going to put it to your throat
Sweaty piggy, you're a bad man
What a fucking sad way to go
Your mother raised you as a joke
I should have wiped away a burden
Used the curtain in the kitchen to choke you
Chorus:
You think you own me
You should have known me
You took the future and the food off my family's plate
You think you'll use me
I'm stronger than you
You take my money, but it's useless
We'll see what I do to you
Look what I do to you
Oh god then you awoke
You started screaming through the duct tape
Don't ever think I'm letting you go
I'm busy digging you a hole
Now you'll be living in a dirt room
Breathing through the a straw of your own
I really think that this is fun for the money
I'll make it comfy for the time wasted making you rich
I want to cover you in ants, bees, and honey
Then take a picture for the cover of our album
Chorus:
You think you own me
You should have known me
You took the future and the food off my family's plate
You think you'll use me
I'm stronger than you
You take my money, but it's useless
We'll see what I do to you
Chorus:
You think you own me
You should have known me
You took the future and the food off my family's plate
You think you'll use me
But I'm stronger than you
You take my money, but it's useless
We'll see what I do to you
And now I see you, oh
'Cause your back's against the wall
And finally you're mine
You're mine
Chorus:
You think you own me
You should have known me
You took the future and the food off my family's plate
You think you'll use me
I'm stronger than you
You take my money, but it's useless

I think this song is literally about killing a business associate, whether it be a manager, or record exec, I'm not sure.

I love the line, I really think this is fun for the money. It seems like he's saying that the experience of getting back at the guy is worth the money that was stolen from him.
My guess is maybe the person who dropped them from the label the first time maybe.
Ok, so a lot of people are talking about the record label, and about how they were dropped, and whatnot- the label screwing them over, etc. I don't have any clear facts on it, but here are some facts I've gathered related to this song:
When talking about this song in an interview for Approaching Normal, he says, 'MR does NOT stand for Motown Records. I can't tell you what it stands for, but it's not that.'
It is possible that he could be referring to the label in this, due to the label dropping them. They didn't have a very tight connection with them from what the public could see; quite a few differences and disagreements. Houstonpress.com has this( and more): "We got dropped," the 26 year-old Furstenfeld says matter-of-factly. "I laugh about it. We put our album out, worked our asses off on it. I don't think Universal knew what we were all about."
To be fair to Universal, what do you do with a band like Blue October? It's hard to find the right fit in today's corporate radio wasteland for a rock-based band with lyrics that redefine angst and a violin as the lead instrument. Universal thought the solution was to dumb it down.
"Universal decided to put 'Breakfast After Ten' out as a single, and I was like, 'What? That's like the worst song I've ever written,' " recounts Furstenfeld. "They said, 'Everyone loves it.' I said, 'Why, dude? I hate singing it.' Every night I'm making the set list and our road manager comes up to me and says, 'You have "Breakfast After Ten" on there, right?' I would say no. He says, 'You better put it on there.' Arrrrgh! What's the point of doing art if you can't do it the way you want to do it?"
Universal also wanted the band to tone down the drama and length of its concerts. Then of course there was the problem of the band's inimitability. "They said, 'You're a Texas band. You can't have a violin in a Texas band.' " Furstenfeld literally snarls his response: "Then why'd you fucking sign me? That's our lead instrument!"
Blue October is my absolute favorite band, no doubt.
Normally Justins lyrics go a little over my head. I think however it is an angry song about the band getting screwed over by someone. I think that that person took advantage of them and made money off them and now justin wants revenge and to humiliate that person for whatever they did...
"I really think that this is fun for the money I'll make it comfy for the time wasted making you rich I want to cover you in ants, bees, and honey Then take a picture for the cover of our album"
I read somewhere that its about justin imagining going back to the past and eliminating himself to prevent what he had done and become (before getting clean/starting a better life, that is)

i'm guessing probably their record company if it has to do with money and the band..... who else could it be?

What does the "MR" written on the dollar bill the woman waves at the thief in the video mean? Possibly the initials of the individual the song was written about?
I am writing a review this song for my music column and will reveal what MR means.

MR could just mean "Mister"

I believe the MR stands for motown records...I could be wrong but thats what I heard somewhere

I think you are all mostly wrong. Ever have an Ex Wife? The song will have FAR more meaning for you if you have. Imagine an ex-wife taking everything you have. Wouldn't you have some hostile feelings? "I'll make you comfy for the time wasted making you rich." Court.... settlements..... Think about it. It's what any REALLY angry ex husband would sing if he only knew the words.
I believe this song is about when they got ripped of by their record label.
"You think you own me You should have known me You took the future and the food off my family's plate You think you'll use me But I'm stronger than you You take my money, but it's useless We'll see what I do to you"
You think you own me, because of the contract and such. By referring to You took the future and food of my family's plate because the label took BO's Money.
Now by
"Now you'll be living in a dirt room Breathing through a straw of your own"
I think 1stly a Dirt Room is much like a Grave, but more so when people say "your digging your grave" or "you're digging your self a hole" not to mention a hole is below US.
Breathing through a Straw OF YOUR OWN, They put BO down and used them and now BO wants the same for them.
Maybe along the same lines as Somebody?

I think its about a drug-dealer that he used to buy shit from

I think this has to do with a stepfather/mother. Not someone related to him by blood "You took the future and the food off my family's plate" meaning he doesn't see them as his family, but an outsider eating dinner with him. (Or maybe he just means you took my money thus food off my family's plate. Eh.)
Inner inhibitions of wanting to hurt someone that had hurt him. He considers them a pig, constantly make food references, and wanting to bury him with straw - "Now you'll be living in a dirt room Breathing through the a straw of your own..." and thinking about using the kitchen's curtain to choke this guy.
Maybe this person asks for a lot of money from him, maybe even guilts him into it - using it for his own pleasures. "I really think that this is fun for the money." This guy thinks he knows him well, but the speaker knows he can't be used anymore. Basically a song saying "I am done with this."
The whole burglary thing set in the video I don't think should be taken literally. The lyrics to this song are much too personal, in my opinion, to be aimed at some stranger breaking into his house. Plus, that much hate for a random thief would be strange and would hardly matter so much as to write a song about it.
This one's got a spot on my all time top workout songs.
If you can't grit your teeth, dig deep and crank though the pain while blasting this song, you're hopeless.
