Hammer and a Stone Lyrics
I'm digging through the darkness
Because I'm a long wall miner
Following a road down
Just so I can sit beside her
I'm a page torn from your novel
Beneath a magnet on your fridge
I'm the stars stuck on your ceiling
So I can watch you while your sleeping
Would you remember me
Do you remember me because
I wanted you so bad
Do you remember me
Do you remember me because
Everything we had
Was like a hammer to a stone
Wrapped like a fender around a tree
The curiosity in you
And all the emptiness in me
Digging through the vices
I don't know where the inside is
So heres my dirty little secret
And I bet you, you can't keep it
I'm a page torn from your novel
A single flower in your lawn
If I'm not everything you wished for
How come you miss me when I'm gone
Do you remember me
Do you remember me because
I wanted you so bad
Do you remember me
Do you remember me because
Everything we have
Was like a hammer to a stone
Wrapped like a fender around a tree
The curiosity in you
And all the emptiness in me
They say a diamond only whispers
To us when we are alone
It's just forever's little trick
To help a hammer find a stone
To help a hammer find a stone
Because I'm a long wall miner
Following a road down
Just so I can sit beside her
I'm a page torn from your novel
Beneath a magnet on your fridge
I'm the stars stuck on your ceiling
So I can watch you while your sleeping
Do you remember me because
I wanted you so bad
Do you remember me

<in this verse its like he's saying he's lost and its like his place in life, his vocation to be lost at this moment then we are introduced to the object that he obviously likes allot because he would follow 'a road down just so a can sit beside her' 'im a page torn from your novel- clearly they have had something going on before and she tried to forget it but she couldnt, it stayed in her memories/life but only vaguely he wants her to think of her and wants her to think that hes watching over her andd protecting her.>

Was like a hammer to a stone Wrapped like a fender around a tree The curiosity in you And all the emptiness in me
<he obviously wants to know if she remembers him... everything they had... now the hammer to the stone i think... means that she stopped him being so cold and enabled him to love ...her love was like a hammer that broke his heart of stone and allowed him to feel... although it could just mean that everything they had was heartbreaking like a fender round a tree - twisted... bent... broken curiosity in you - shes over thinking everyhting and she still doesnt know what she wants and all the emptiness in me - self explanitory>

in conclusion the main metaphor is she is the hammer, he is the stone.
this is a very thoughtful song and it is in my opinion the greatest song ever... ever
I feel that he died, it would explain the watching over as the stars, a single rose on her lawn, digging through the darkness. He proposed to her and she said no, he got drunk and went out and crashed into a tree. Hence the like a fender around a tree.
This is a great song. I'd like to know what Jason Ross was thinking about when he wrote it, but my thoughts are...
Many of the songs on "Day and Night Driving" and the previous album reference divorce and losing loved ones. I've assumed that the entire album is about the fall out after an ended marriage.
"Hammer and a Stone" seems to be about his child. I've interpreted he line: "I'm the stars stuck on your ceiling / So I can watch you while your sleeping," to be a reference to the glow-in-the-dark stars that kids stick to their ceilings. Outside of this line, the song could be about longing for any lost love, but this line makes me think that it is father-daughter love.
The hammer to stone metaphor could easily be a reference to a sculptor. The father longs to be helping sculpt the child's future - to be present - but that is not happening. The fender to a tree is a reference to his not being present due to something that he did to lose her trust.
"Do you remember me?" - The breakup happened a while ago and/or the child was young. He wonders if the kid remembers/cares about him anymore.
"I wanted you so bad" - He wanted the kid badly, but now he's gone.
"Day and Night Driving" is one of my favorite albums. The songs are sad. I interpret most of the album as him reviewing his life, how touring impacted his relationship, and how his misses what he had.
@laffeaux in think it's about being in love with a narcissist. Do you remember me because I wanted you so bad. Not because she wanted him, but he wanted her. She didn't care about him, just that she was wanted.
The curiosity in you and the emptiness in me. Curiosity of the narcissist, not love, in the partner, and the partner is left empty once he realizes he will never feel love from her..
