Death Of Me Lyrics

I should have seen all these signs around me
But I was comfortable inside these wounds
So go ahead and take another piece of me now
While we all bow down to you

You tear me down and then you pick me up
You take it all but still its not enough
You try to tell me you can heal me
But I’m still bleeding and you will be the death of me

How can you mend my affliction
If you’re the sickness and not the cure
But too long I have faked this addiction
Another sacrifice I made cause I’m pure

You tear me down and then you pick me up
You take it all but still its not enough
You try to tell me you can heal me
But I’m still bleeding and you will be the death of me

You tear me down and then you pick me up
You take it all but still its not enough
You try to tell me you can heal me
But I’m still bleeding and you will be the death of me

I won’t forget
I cannot forget this
I won’t forget
I’ll never forget this
I won’t forget
I cannot forget this
I won’t forget
I’ll never forget this

I won’t forget
I cannot forget this
I won’t forget
I’ll never forget this
I won’t forget
I cannot forget this
I won’t forget
I’ll never forget this

I cannot prove this solution
You aren’t the one that I thought you were
And so I learned to embrace this illusion
I will separate this all to a blur

You tear me down and then you pick me up
You take it all but still its not enough
You try to tell me you can heal me
But I’m still bleeding and you will be the death of me

And you will be the death of me

I won’t forget
I cannot forget this

And you will be the death of me

In “Death of Me,” the band steps inside the throes of conflict as an emotionally wounded Michael Barnes laments, “You tear me down and then you pick me up/You take it all and still it's not enough.” However, the unexpected twist behind the meaning of the lyrics is that YOU are the ‘you’ in the song. “The song is really a regretful introspective moment, where you realize that your own actions have led you down a path you never wanted to take,” says guitarist Anthony Armstrong. “You are the one who keeps tearing yourself down in some kind of vicious cycle that never seems to end.” Despite its angry moments, the song weeps the emotions of a soul teetering on the brink, while still packing a powerhouse chorus and gorgeous strings that float effortlessly beside the loud crunchy guitars. Song Meaning

THe whole "Yourself" being the cause of your suffering as in "You tear me down..." as you being the antagonist in the lyrics is exactly what i was thinking, head on man.

it's kinda like the Hard Rock version of So Long Self by MercyMe

to me this song represents how the worlds build you up just to tear you down. i am in the army and that is exactly what is happening to me right now. it shows how you have to learn that sin is out there and that you must realize that your own worst enemy is your human nature to do what feels right and may not be the morally right thing to do.

My Interpretation

This is one of my all time favorite songs, and the video is amazing. Red's lyrics definitely have a common theme, which I strongly relate to. The song helps remind me that my selfishness is sick and needs to end, before it ends me.

I see this song more as a narrative of the struggle between the flesh and the spirit.

Obviously the quote donotbug posted is the intended meaning of the song, which is very obvious if you have seen the video. I absolutely love this song, I can't get enough. Every time I listen to it I watch the clip instead cause they did such a good job of the video.

"You tear me down and then you pick me up You take it all but still its not enough You try to tell me you can heal me But I'm still bleeding and you will be the death of me"

(My own personal opinion): When it says this I believe "you" is referring to those temporary joys in life, or sin. Because think about it those temporary joys(pornography, drugs, alcohol, etc.) do provide us with happiness and feel good chemicals sent to our brain. But in the end they tear us down. It's sort of a self fulfilling prophecy. Think about it like this:

Say you're struggling with masturbation, and porn. You want to stop and please God, but every time you do it you feel like crap and you carry guilt and shame with you. Masturbation, 99% of the time, has emotional triggers. That just means stress, having a bad day, or those feelings of guilt and shame can cause you to masturbate to make you feel better. So when you do have those feelings it's easier to fall into that temptation hence the "You tear me down, then you pick me up"

Satan wants to take everything from us, our salvation, faith, and happiness we receive from being Christians. But that's not enough for Satan he wants our lives to hurt and cause our brothers to stumble that's what I get from the "You take it all, but still it's not enough"

"You try to tell me you can heal me" think about it Satan is a sly, mischievous thing. Remember how he tempted Jesus and he even quoted Scripture to make Jesus think that it's the right thing to do. Satan's lies will seem not that bad at first, and maybe even beneficial, but once he has you in his hands, you will reap the consequences and things will go to heck, explaining the "but I'm still bleeding"

AS for the "you will be the death of me" it says in Romans 6:23:

"For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord."

Sin WILL be the death of us, but thankfully for God's amazing Son we will live again and will be given a second chance. We are forgiven.

@Forgiven123 I'm an interpreter for the Deaf adn get to do RED this at Rock The Universe. Love this and i think this is spot on!! great points! ty

donotbug, thank you for the comment :) I had a feeling this was the meaning behind the song after watching the video... Awesome song, thats all I can say ^^

This song is the bomb. I can relate because I feel the evils of the world taking me down, but when I call Jesus for help, He always saves me. In the video, it shows the two sides fighting. Neither side wins because we will always face demons in life, but we just gotta power through and rely on Christ.

Well I'm not the first to say this, but the song ISN'T about the world bringing you down or anyone else. It's about yourself and your own sin that becomes the death of you. But it is true that in the video neither of them win and that is because we will always have those sinful desires in our lives. But like you said, we just have to look to Christ for help and focus on Him.

I'm sure donotbug is correct as to the intended meaning of the song, however I took something quite different away from it.

I understand Red is a Christian band, and though I'm an atheist, this song is, like most great songs, open to interpretation. So open, in fact, that you can take it the completely opposite direction. Religion claims to be able to heal people, but often only represents the death of their critical thought. They also tear people down through the myth of "original sin," telling people to feel unworthy of Christ's gift, which builds them up.

Just another take on it. Again, I'm positive that the artist didn't intend this meaning.

ClemsonPoker, I really appreciate your humility...it really gets on my nerves when both Christians and Athiests verbally tear each others throats out. I'm a little confused as to what you mean by saying that Christianity tears people down. Definitely it does teach that we are not worth of God's love, however it also puts a great deal of emphasis on each individual's intrinsic worth...a worth assigned to them by God and shown through Christ's death and resurrection. I just wanted to clarify that (perhaps i misunderstood what you were saying). Also, yes, i agree many religious...

Hi, TLS.

I agree that the level of discourse between the two could generally be higher, and in fact even my own post could have been worded differently, perhaps more politely.

The dogmatic idea that we are not worthy of Christ is, at it's core, debilitating to your sense of self. It's designed that way (my opinion, of course), so that the religion can rush in behind to fill the void that they hope you don't notice THEY created. The message seems to be "Jesus loves you and forgives you, but that's in spite of the fact that you're a...

Yeah, Poker - I took that view of it too. Knowing Red is a Christian band and that most of his songs are talking to/about God, I was honestly questioning if he lost his religion after hearing this song. I kind of assumed he'd finally been pushed too far with the "filthy sinner" (as you put it) side of things and was done. That's pretty much still my personal interpretation of the song.
