This song is about stephanie seymour, clearly. "It was a bargain for the summer And I thought I had it all" -referring to their happier times together
"I was the one who gave you everything The one who took the fall" -referring to how he idolised her and gave her everthing but was the one left heartbroken by it all,

@julianpani ..LOL ME TOO!!!..i actually joined this site real quick so that i may respond to your post...as i found a fellow "There was A Time" singing enthusiast lol check out this youtbe video of this kid singing TWAT karaoke...i seriously left a message on his video tellin him i thought he was just lip syncing initially....the dudes AMAZING! video quality is terrible BUT audio is good enough to hear!...i day dream of doin this as well karaoke lol...sadly however half of the audience wouldn't even know it was a GNR song i bet :( shame as its up...

I have my own idea about this song.
The woman is perfect, and he worships her, but she turns nasty and becomes manipulative, yet he tries to turn a blind eye to it, stick his head in the sand.
"Didn't want to know it all, didn't wanna know at all, and I don't wanna know it now."
But in spite of accepting this, he still loves her, be it because he feels he can do no better, or it's true love. Nonetheless, he pines over her.
"I would do anything for you, there was a time!"
It's an amazing song, meaning aside. The solo is incredible, and Axl's wailing near the end almost makes me want to cry. (In a good way.)

Just recently broke up with my girlfriend and i think i can relate to this song, what i feel it's meaning is anyway.
It seems to me to be about breaking up with a girl after a long relationship where you shared everything, built yoour lives on eachother, but now it's all gone and they're thinking, maybe this isn't the right time to be together, maybe in the future but not now, and he still feels shite about it but keeps telling himself the same thing, but HAs to move on..or w.e :P
I think this is my favorite song on the album. I wish the official release would come out.
