Northern Skies Lyrics
I have returned to Northern Skies
Where Summer hasn't touched
The clouds that pass above
I have returned to sombre greys
Of days too early to come
And too hurried to stay
I have left a million stars
And an ocean light and clearly blue
I have left the warmth of the sun
And a million adventures not yet begun
For once there was beauty here for me
Under the wide Northern Skies
And once there was magic here for me
Under the wide Northen Skies
I saw trees as green and this dark as blue
Heartbreak and poetry with deeper roots
Now I know this is lonely country
And it leads me only back to the sea
For once there was beauty here for me
Under the wide Northern Skies
And once there was magic here for me
Under the wide Northen Skies
Where Summer hasn't touched
The clouds that pass above
Of days too early to come
And too hurried to stay
And an ocean light and clearly blue
I have left the warmth of the sun
And a million adventures not yet begun
Under the wide Northern Skies
And once there was magic here for me
Under the wide Northen Skies
Heartbreak and poetry with deeper roots
Now I know this is lonely country
And it leads me only back to the sea
Under the wide Northern Skies
And once there was magic here for me
Under the wide Northen Skies

Favourite song on the album. For some reason I always think of the book, the Northern Lights when I hear this. It is obviously about returning from a vaction "I have left a million stars And an ocean light and clearly blue" somewhere tropical and with little infrastructure, hence she can see the stars. And now she has come home to Britain "Northern Skies" and for once she finds happiness there and has a greater sense of appreciation for the place she lives in. That is my interpreation anyway.
If I'm not mistaken, this is actually a cover.
The lyrics are almost identical to a song by Paolo Nutini, a song which is pretty much unknown because it's the hidden track on his debut studio album ("These Streets"). Look it up on youtube.
Dido's version is much better in my opinion, I'm just rather surprised no-one seems to have noticed this is not exactly an original song by her.
Just to make it clear, Rollo (dido's brother) co-wrote Paolo Nutini's "Northern Skies" so he owns the rights of the song..Dido didn't steal or copy anything..the songs are different, I personally still prefer Dido's one.

I just looked and yes your right it is, slightly changed however. It is still a wonderful song.
Honestly, I think its metaphorical. I don't think its really about traveling.
I think its about someone who just ended a relationship or ended something. What ever that something was, it was very good at one time and there was a lot of hope and things to look forward too. Now it is over, perhaps by choice or no choice at all. Either way, its over now and this person is reminiscing about their loss and is now entering the sad world of broken hearts.
Though the lyrics are sad, I think its a lovely song.
The second I heard this song I was hit by an interpretation that hasn't left me yet: the singer has killed herself and is looking back at the Earth from beyond the grave. She doesn't seem to be in any particular afterlife (heavon or hell, enlightenment... others... I'm not an expert on religion) but simply a state of being after our current one.
The fact that she's "returned" to this place says to me that her spirit was here before she was born, and has come back now she is dead.
I actually listen to this song and think of my life...I love this song! It seems to be about living in a place and missing the old homeland that they once lived in (I have left a million stars And an ocean light and clearly blue I have left the warmth of the sun And a million adventures not yet begun) I listen to the song and just know exactly what it's saying..i miss my hometown (in Alabama) and im now living in the north (Indiana) and I lived here when I was eight yrs. old and think of being so little and looking up at the northern skies and feeling so small (For once there was beauty here for me Under the wide Northern Skies) then we moved down south and that's where I called home for so long. This song I think talks about feeling alone and the yearning for home.
this song has so much meaning and Dido is my ultimate fav. singer EVER!! withlovexxblondy
this song seems pretty optimistic to me, actually. like she's returned to what used to be home, and discovered it isn't anymore...but that her discovery has provided resolution, and she's ready to find beauty elsewhere again. perhaps?
