Mr. Hurricane Lyrics

I thought I was a victim
The people hated me
I never had a homeland
I had no safety

One day I saw a beast coming
From across the sea
I never knew fear
Until he came for me

I called for the killer
I looked for the knife
I drank from his river
And ruined my life

I saw him coming at me
So empty and so cold
I never knew emotion til he caught me in his fold

Can you march for even one more day
With a beast right up in your face?
Can you see me dying in this house
And anyhow
Saw a man and then I thought I called him Hurricane

Out of the harness
Let it go let it go
Stumble in the darkness
Turn on the light ya
Get into the madness
Now take your pills
Tryin to be righteous
I love the beast ya

Out of the harness
Let it go let it go
Stumble in the darkness
Turn on the light ya
Get into the madness
Now take your pills
Tryin to be righteous
I love the beast ya

I stopped being the victim
But you weren't there to see
I never felt better
Until you prayed for me

I felt like a refugee from the grave
I had to wear that stuff in the shade (?)
Dissin in life
With your crying game
I never fell in love so deeply in vain

I stand wild
And nothing's my side
And while I'll slowly die
Deeply from the inside

And now I scream to the "another day"
Never again, Mr. Hurricane

Out of the harness
Let it go let it go
Stumble in the darkness
Turn on the light ya
Get into the madness
Now take your pills
Tryin to be righteous
I love the beast ya

Out of the harness
Let it go let it go
Stumble in the darkness
Turn on the light ya
Get into the madness
Now take your pills
Tryin to be righteous
I love the beast ya

Don't mess with the Beast Mr. Hurricane
You'll never get to be so freely insane

I think this song is about someone who's got a split personality and it's a song about their therapy. (Sorry it's so long, it does explain a lot though)

The Beast is her therapist. Mr Hurricane is her other personality.

Verse 1: basically saying she didn't really have anything and she felt really isolated and then one day 'a beast' came (a therapist) and tried to make her better.

'I never had a homeland, I had no safety' - she's not emotionally stable and because of this she doesn't feel like she fits in anywhere (homeland).

'One day I saw a beast coming from across the sea' - usually the sea is linked to tranquility but in this case I think she see's the world like she's on her own little island and someone coming over the sea is like they're invading her space and her little isolated island.

'I never knew fear until he came for me' - she's scared about the therapy.

'I drank from his river, it ruined my life' - I think this bit is talking about the 'killer' she mentions just before as opposed to the beast. The killer I think is her split personality fighting against the therapy, ie, she called out for a killer and because the killer is herself she looked for a knife. The killer though she see's as a separate person and so the line above could mean the killer has done things before after she called for him and it always went badly. If that makes sense?

'I never knew emotion till he caught me in his fold' - he is the therapist again and to begin with she's really scared and convinced the therapy isn't necessary (I saw him coming at me empty and so cold), empty meaning empty in what it can give to her. But as soon as he catches her in his fold (could represent the fold on the paperwork but I reckon it's just his therapy room) he treats her and she gets happier, an emotion she didn't know until he helped her.

'Can you imagine living one more day with a beast right up in your face?' - she's still not sure about the therapy.

'Can you see me dying in this house, in any house' - is her split personality going to die in her body, in any body for that matter?

'Saw a man in vain, blinded by the hurricane' - the hurricane is her other self flipping out and getting angered, hence his name Mr Hurricane. The beast is the man in vain, meaning he's quite up himself for being a therapist and then Mr Hurricane gets blinded by the anger towards the beast.

Chorus: her talking to herself, reassuring herself she'll get better.

'(Broke out of the harness) Let it go, let it go' - Mr Hurricanes broken out but she's letting him go, repeating to make it sound more insane and like she's worried about letting him go.

'(Stumbled in the darkness) Turn on the lights y'all' - she started out scared but now she knows what to do. ie, she used to be in the dark but she know what to do about that, turn on the lights.

'(Overcome the madness) then take you're pills' - speaks for itself really.

'(Finally Righteous) I love the beast y'all' - finally beaten Mr Hurricane hence she loves her therapist 'the beast'

Verse 2:

'I stopped being the victim but you weren't there to see' - talking to Mr Hurricane, she's possibly angry he's not there anymore.

'I never felt bitter until you crippled me' - a cripple is someone who is missing a leg or arm or has no use of them. This could be her way of saying she didn't feel bad until Mr Hurricane was gone, maybe now she's missing him.

'I never fell in love so deeply in vain' - vanity is where you're all over yourself so she could say she was in love with herself, Mr Hurricane. The beginning lines I'm not too sure of but I assume they're about her feelings towards loosing him.

'Never again Mr Hurricane' - all the next part are her thinking about the horrible feeling he's giving her, like all the paranoia and whatnot, probably social isolation and all, and so she says 'Never again' because i'll never happen again.

Outro:

'Don't mess with the beast, Mr Hurricane. You're not coming for peace stop bringing the insane' - this makes the most sense of everything I've covered so I don't really need to go through it.

Sorry it's so long, thank you for reading, if you got this far anyway.

My Interpretation

In my opinion, it's about unrequited love. The "victim" meets someone who scares her. There's a good reason for her fear, because the beast is so compelling that she falls deeply in love and in vain. She fights it ("I looked for the knife") but she is overcome. The beast doesn't love her back, and she must live in the torture of loving the beast.

This is awesome... just craziness. Maybe the beast is a metaphor for something really bad happening, and mr. hurricane is perhaps a friend that helps him fight the beast.

An alienated young woman with a paranoid streak grows dangerously violent and deranged. She falls in love with someone, possibly a therapist who is trying to help her, and this love encourages her to take her psychiatric medication but the love is one-sided and the end of the song suggests that she's about to backslide and poses a threat to "Mr. Hurricane".

My Interpretation

Oh, incidentally the video was weird. It made it about bees, not a beast. Way to mislead people about what the words are!

The lyrics here are pretty good, but sloppy in some places. Here's pretty much exactly what's being sung:

I thought I was a victim That people hated me I never had a homeland I had no safety

One day I saw a beast comin' From across the sea I never knew fear Until he came for me

I called out for the killer I looked for the knife I drank from his river It ruined my life

I saw him comin' at me Empty and so cold I never knew emotion 'Til he caught me in his fold

Can you imagine living one more day With a beast right up in your face? Can you see me dying in this house, in any house Saw a man in vain, blinded by the Hurricane

(Broke out of the harness) Let it go let it go (Stumbled in the darkness) Turn on the light y'all (Overcame the madness) Then take your pills (Finally righteous) I love the beast y'all

(Broke out of the harness) Let it go let it go (Stumbled in the darkness) Turn on the light y'all (Overcame the madness) Then take your pills (Finally righteous) I love the beast y'all

I stopped being the victim But you weren't there to see I never felt bitter 'Til you crippled me

I felt like a refugee from the pain I had to wear that shroud with no shame Deceit and lies were your crying game I never fell in love so deeply in vain

So I stay a while A knife in my side While I slowly died Defeat from the inside

And now I scream 'til the end of the day Never again, Mr. Hurricane

(Broke out of the harness) Don't mess with the Beast, Mr. Hurricane (Stumbled in the darkness) You're not comin' for peace, stop bringing the insane (Overcame the madness) Don't mess with the Beast, Mr. Hurricane (Finally righteous) You're not comin' for peace, stop bringing the insane

OK - First of all you can't talk about the meaning of these lyrics without understanding the reference to Revelations 13:1 - "And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea" Mr. Hurricane "One day I saw a beast comin'From across the sea". Obviously the band has indeed named themselves after the beast of St. John the Divine's Revelation if there were any doubt. The beast is the enemy, the false prophet, the one who brings on the apocalypse of humanity. Read it for yourself: http://www.bartleby.com/108/66/13.html What is Mr. Hurricane? Is that a derisive name for Christ? I really don't understand all that the speaker is saying but it seems that he is not on a wholesome path. Anyone have better insight into this? I hope this discussion continues. Be careful what you listen to. Choose the path of light kids.

Song Meaning

I agree with EmmaBea about this song being related to addiction. Simply stated Mr. Hurricane is addiction and the Beast is the drug. She loves the way the drug makes her feel, but hates the addiction. Being a pill addict myself this song really struck home for me.

Curiously, GArdist1 experiences the singer of Mr Hurricane a man. However, my experience from just listening to the song for over five years, and just today seeing video for the first time, clearly supports that lyricist and vocalist,Betty Bonifassi is a woman. Check out https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beatrice_Bonifassi.

Having been an addict and in therapy, my interpretation of this outstanding song is along the lines of beckvi's writings above.
