Please Forgive Me (Song of the Crow) Lyrics
My demons walk with me
They told me not to leave them...alone
I put you on the tree
I tore your heart to pieces
You swept me off my feet
You gave your heart to me...alone
I left you out at sea
I left you there to plea
Please forgive me
Please please forgive me
My demons waltz with me
I beg them not to leave me...alone
And so your heart is free
And so your heart is free
They told me not to leave them...alone
I put you on the tree
I tore your heart to pieces
You gave your heart to me...alone
I left you out at sea
I left you there to plea
Please please forgive me
I beg them not to leave me...alone
And so your heart is free
And so your heart is free

I got to sit down and interview william about a month ago and this whole album is about his divorce with his wife and the things that led to it. he cheated on her and this song (the song of the crow) is his side of it and asking for forgiveness. and his song i don't feel it anymore(song of the sparrow) is her side of the story.
(Track 5 from the album The Sparrow and the Crow)
The contrast is the song is poignant. As the man recognizes and proclaims his betrayal he begs for forgiveness from the one he has isolated, wounded, and abandoned, yet he shepherds his “demons.” In other words he can not nor will he forgive himself, because by attending and nurturing his demons he privately absolves his wife’s suffering.
love this interpretation. excellent wording.
love this interpretation. excellent wording.
Quote from William Fitzsimmons about this song from an interview he did for faceculture.tv: "It's the attitude that I’ve tried to have for the last couple years - to just be humble, to just try to make up for things that I’ve done in the past. I think that’s the best way, for at least me to live - to try to be at peace with everyone as best I can, and myself. That’s taken on an increasingly important role every single day and hopefully I’ll never forget that." http://www.faceculture.tv/index.php?cnti_key=11789988
In the last verse, I think the first line is supposed to read "my demons waltz with me". This makes a lot more sense than "my demons walks with me". It also brings a whole new depth to the song. This song shows how his relationships with his demons grow. In the first verse his demons are simply walking with him, but in the last verse they're dancing together. Also in the first verse the demons are asking him not to leave them alone. Almost as if they're following him and wanting him to be their companion. In the last verse not only is he asking them not to leave him alone, he's begging. He has now become dependent on them, instead of the other way around. Beautiful comparison.
This song is a simple admission of what the subject did to his wife. Despite her sweeping him off his feet and giving her heart to him-along. He left betrayed that by, among other things, leaving her out to sea.
He speaks of his demons- in this song, his demons show up in the form of adultery and lust- as he has cheated on his wife with another woman.
Another meaning would be a somewhat religious meaning. Obviously, we're explicitly talking about demons- which have their place in the religious argument. When he writes "I put you on a tree" this could be a metaphor for the crucifixion of Jesus.
I see it as a picture of Judas after he betrayed Jesus. Pretty straightforward, but could easily be wrong.
I definitely see betrayal here. I think the line "I put you on that tree" is speaking metaphorically of crucifixion...this does not necessarily mean Jesus. I think he is comparing the pain of betrayal to the pain of crucifixion; tho as Judas betrayed Jesus, I can see how he could use that story to paint this picture.
In the beginning of the song, it seems as if he resents his demons; they are following him, clinging to him. By the end of the song he is the one who is hanging on to his demons; because he cannot let go of his demons, he is letting go of his lover by the end of the song "and so your heart is free".
I like fusillade's explanation of the contradictory nature of the song. Well put.
(note: I believe the first line of the fourth paragraph is "My demons waltz with me" not "walks")
Bitte vergib mir Bitte verzeihen Sie mir bitte
Meine Dämonen Walzer mit mir Ich bitte sie mich nicht zu verlassen ... allein Und so dein Herz ist frei Und so dein Herz ist frei
