Hopeless Lyrics

are you aware i'm fake?
are you aware i'm everything i hate?
does it make you proud
when i entertain a crowd?

hell...

does it make you feel cold
to know that i would never die for you?
i would never die for you, oh
does it make you feel cold
to know that i would never die for you?
i would never die for you, oh

my steady hands are stained
no amount of blood could wash my sins away
i never felt so infected
so disconnected
lock myself away
i got nothing nice to say

yeahhh...

does it make you feel cold
to know that i would never die for you?
i would never die for you, oh
does it make you feel cold
to know that i would never die for you?
i would never die for you, oh

every time i fall for myself
i lose you just a little bit more

does it make you feel cold
to know that i would never die for you?
i would never die for you, oh
does it make you feel cold
to know that i would never die for you?
i would never, ever die for you

I believe our friend Dan here was once again writing about his thoughts of an inner battle he fights, between religion (in his mind, a relationship with Christ - speaking to him in the second person here) and musical success. Dan sees a problem with his ego, fueled by the high of performing live, clashing with his religious upbringing and beliefs of keeping humble.

"does it make you feel cold to know that i would never die for you?"

Dan is basically calling himself a hypocrite here, or at least weak. He's asking Jesus, who he believes died for his sins, if he feels cold/disconnected that Dan wouldn't (or couldn't) do the same in return.

The mood of the song makes me wonder if Dan is losing his drive to write about these things (religion), as it has a sort of cynical heir to it - almost angry. By the lyrics, it seems as if "Hopeless" refers to his own fate, but paired with the music, it seems as if he may be calling the fight to stay religious hopeless.

I wonder which it is. Dan, are you out there, buddy? Shed some light for an old fan?

Wow, only one comment? This is song is amazing! It is also very powerful (to me). I always thought the first line was "Are you aware I'm faith?" and it still sounds like that, but I like fake better. I think you might be right, Kevin, but I always pictured it as him referring to everyone around him, lovers, friends, people who look up to him. But! I'll never know, but I like the idea of yours too. I hope it isn't him giving up on religion though- he's the whole reason I started going to church again. XP
