Building Lyrics
Shouldering the blame
walking into frame
Like a lighted silhouette
Against a cotton sheet
Smothering the crease
Tin can in hand
waiting for god to come around
But he never comes around
He never comes around
Quiet like a mouse
Building up your house
Just to tear it down
Leaving us the pieces
Do they ever fit?
Tin can in hand
Waiting for god to come around
But he never comes around
He never comes around
He never comes around
walking into frame
Like a lighted silhouette
Against a cotton sheet
Smothering the crease
waiting for god to come around
But he never comes around
He never comes around
Building up your house
Just to tear it down
Leaving us the pieces
Do they ever fit?
Waiting for god to come around
But he never comes around
He never comes around
He never comes around

I love this song, it's so different form the rest of the album. So simple and beutiful. It's a song about forever being left begind in life and never achieving your dreams. I think (though I can't be sure) that the second verse is a reference to Robert Burns' poem "To a mouse".
I think this song may be even more beautifl that Your Revolution Is A Joke. Which is quite an achievment in my eyes.....
It's such a simple song but it works so well. I think this song has something to do with death, with the reference to God and 'he never comes around'. Possibly about atheism.
This song is obviously about the absence of God. (aka atheism) the majority of the songs in this cd follow in that same light. (or absence of light) ha! but seriously, the "theme", i guess you could call it, of this cd is atheism. Just look at the cover... two giant DNA molecules coming out of the ground.(hinting evolution rather than creation) Love the song and the entire cd.
i thinks its if people were athesist then the world would be better for those in third world countries. its like how the world seems to beleive that god will help those who need it.
its evident with so many people dying due things as lack of food and medical care a prayer just cant simply save them. "tin can in hand" and many chrisitans will go over to such countries and convince them that by turning to a religion they will be saved... "but he never comes around"
this is what i think the song is about
There's something so amazing and beautiful about this song, it's so raw and vivadly human. I agree with all of your interpretations, espcially ZERO's.
While I don't necessarily disagree with the general opinion of the meaning of this song, I do disagree with some of the statements made, especially by ZERO.
You may be right in saying that the song is about how the world would be better if the world was atheist and so on but your claims as to why it is evident are quite out there. Christians who serve as missionaries to foreign countries (at least those Christians with a strong biblical backing) are not stupid enough to tell people that all of their problems will be solved if they become a Christian. Christianity is based on the promise of eternal life after death, and a spiritually fulfilling life while on earth. It is very evident throughout the Bible, especially through the stories of men such as Job and Paul, that the Christian life is not one to be envied and will be filled with many hardships and trials.
As for God "never coming around," this is a very understandable thing for people to think as life is tough and a lot of times it seems like you are on your own. However, I would just like you to think about the possibility of God working in ways that don't make sense to you at some point, but will later work out on your behalf. No one can really understand completely how God works so it is easy to say he isn't there at all but if you examine the lives of those who really follow him, you can see that he is present.
Anyway, I don't really want to get into an atheism vs. Christianity debate, thats not why I posted here. I personally think atheism is the most unsupported and ignorant of any belief, and that agnosticism is far more understandable. My only real point for posting here is to say that Christians do not believe that being a Christian will solve all of your worldly problems and no real Christian would go around spreading such falsehoods. Also many mission trips performed by Christians address simple human needs such as providing food, shelter, and water to those in need. The Bible teaches that we should not just say to someone who is in a bad situation, "God bless, I hope everything works out", but we should help them in whatever way we can physically as well. Just wanted to clear that up.
Also, I love Funeral for a Friend, have been a huge fan since Seven Ways. No matter their or our own beliefs, I think we can all agree that their music is amazing!
