I Know It's Over (The Smiths cover) Lyrics

Oh Mother, I can feel the soil falling over my head
And as I climb into an empty bed
Oh well. Enough said.
I know it's over - still I cling
I don't know where else I can go
Oh ...
Oh Mother, I can feel the soil falling over my head
See, the sea wants to take me
The knife wants to slit me
Do you think you can help me ?
Sad veiled bride, please be happy
Handsome groom, give her room
Loud, loutish lover, treat her kindly
(Though she needs you
More than she loves you)
And I know it's over - still I cling
I don't know where else I can go
Over and over and over and over
Over and over, la ...
I know it's over
And it never really began
But in my heart it was so real
And you even spoke to me, and said :
"If you're so funny
Then why are you on your own tonight ?
And if you're so clever
Then why are you on your own tonight ?
If you're so very entertaining
Then why are you on your own tonight ?
If you're so very good-looking
Why do you sleep alone tonight ?
I know ...
'Cause tonight is just like any other night
That's why you're on your own tonight
With your triumphs and your charms
While they're in each other's arms..."
It's so easy to laugh
It's so easy to hate
It takes strength to be gentle and kind
Over, over, over, over
It's so easy to laugh
It's so easy to hate
It takes guts to be gentle and kind
Over, over
Love is Natural and Real
But not for you, my love
Not tonight, my love
Love is Natural and Real
But not for such as you and I, my love
Oh Mother, I can feel the soil falling over my head
Oh Mother, I can feel the soil falling over my head
Oh Mother, I can feel the soil falling over my head
Oh Mother, I can feel the soil falling over my ...
Oh Mother, I can feel the soil falling over my head
Oh Mother, I can even feel the soil falling over my head
Oh Mother, I can feel the soil falling over my head
Oh Mother, I can feel the soil falling over my ...

I hate hearing him sing this part.... See, the sea wants to take me The knife wants to slit me Do you think you can help me ?

Just like it breaks my heart when I listen to Grace and he sings "The rain is falling and I believe My time has come... It reminds me of the pain I might leave, leave behind"

I cried all night, the first time I heard this song and Buckley's version of it. I love the Smiths, but this cover is what I believe repaired the relationship between my mother and I.

"Oh mother, I can feel the soil falling over my head." To me, it seems that even at your very worst, when you're dead and lying in a casket and you feel the soil falling over you, the person you will always cry to and remember the most is your mother. They are Morrissey's words but Jeff sings it so naturally and so purely and so so beautifully.

What is it about Jeff Buckley that made him so amazing at doing covers? Absolutely brilliant take on the song, I really love it. The way he's wailing at the end...

Jeff is the only one i know who does covers better than the original. i love the way he sings them like he wrote them himself, he really was a unique, very gifted musician.

This part can truly speak to anyone, it's so beautiful.

Why aren't there any comments for this yet?

Anyway like every other cover Jeff did, this one is amazing. Still not sure whether I like this or the original better. They're so different that it's difficult to compare the two of them.

This live version is the definitive Buckley cover of this song. Everything else pales in comparison:

Jeff Buckley drowned n the Mississippi, near New Orleans. " Ocean is calling me. Soil falling over my head.\ncutting his throat." I think this was musical plea to any one in earshot that loneliness was becoming too much for him. It was a step in the process of him taking his \nown life, which I think he did.
