Mariel's Brazen Overture Lyrics
MARTIN:
Now that we have expired
I should be honest
Marie, I was unfaithful
To you and it kills me
And I have a son
Who I've never met
MARIEL:
Martin, you can be honest
With me if you want to
I don't want your devils
To hold me and haunt me
'Cause I have a love
For you that's absurd
MARTIN: For eighty miles, oh, how we drove
MARIEL: I drove
MARTIN: You drove
M&M: We drove together
MARTIN: For eighty miles, puffing our smokes
MARIEL: I smoked
MARTIN: You smoked
M&M: We smoked together
MARTIN: But you loved me
MARIEL: Yes, I loved you
MARTIN: For seven days, oh, how we drank
MARIEL: I drank
MARTIN: You drank
M&M: We drank together
MARTIN: At roadside pubs in the rain
MARIEL: I drank
MARTIN: You drank
M&M: Let's drink together
MARTIN: But you need me
MARIEL: Yes, I need you
MARTIN:
Mariel, someone's bleeding in the wall
The house is beginning to crumble
The baby is on fire
Oh, dear! The zebras scaling the roof
The mice are beginning to scatter
Oh, Marie!
You tied my shoes for me
You tied them tight
But the roof blew off
And you fell out of love
I wasted time on you
I wasted socks
But the sun went down
And I fell out of love
Mariel, would you love me if I was a liar?
Now that we have expired
I should be honest
Marie, I was unfaithful
To you and it kills me
And I have a son
Who I've never met
Martin, you can be honest
With me if you want to
I don't want your devils
To hold me and haunt me
'Cause I have a love
For you that's absurd
MARIEL: I drove
MARTIN: You drove
M&M: We drove together
MARTIN: For eighty miles, puffing our smokes
MARIEL: I smoked
MARTIN: You smoked
M&M: We smoked together
MARTIN: But you loved me
MARIEL: Yes, I loved you
MARIEL: I drank
MARTIN: You drank
M&M: We drank together
MARTIN: At roadside pubs in the rain
MARIEL: I drank
MARTIN: You drank
M&M: Let's drink together
MARTIN: But you need me
MARIEL: Yes, I need you
Mariel, someone's bleeding in the wall
The house is beginning to crumble
The baby is on fire
Oh, dear! The zebras scaling the roof
The mice are beginning to scatter
Oh, Marie!
You tied them tight
But the roof blew off
And you fell out of love
I wasted time on you
I wasted socks
But the sun went down
And I fell out of love

Great song! Second favorite to Mineshafts. Good job on the lyrics, it's definitely hard to hear sometimes. The only true part I can fix is the line that says, "The mice are beginning to 'scatter'". In the first Mariel verse I think she says devils instead of downfalls but it's too hard to tell. The only other spot that I don't think is right is in the last verse. You have, I wasted size. But I don't think that makes sense and I'm certain they say something else. Other than that real nice work on sometimes difficult to hear lyrics.
As for the meaning, it sounds like a confession to his wife. What's I like the most about this song is they do this through using Redwall characters, Mariel and Martin. In my mind I can picture little rat like characters singing this songs. It's a rather funny image.
i agree with ihatehatehaters, i think it's "i don't want your devils."
would you love me if I was a liar?
Here are the correct lyrics off Margot's website...
now that we have expired, I should be honest. Mary, I was unfaithful to you, and it kills me. And I have a son that I've never met.
Martin, you can be honest with me if you want to, but I don't want all your devils to hold me and haunt me. 'Cause I have a love for you that's absurd.
For 80 miles, oh how we drove. (I drove) you drove, we drove together! For 80 miles, puffin; our smokes. (I smoked), you smoked. We smoked together!
But you loved me. (Yes, I loved you)
For 7 days, oh how we drank. (I drank) you drank. We drank together! At roadside pubs. In the rain. (I drank). You drank. Let's drink together.
But you need me. (Yes, I need you)
Mariel! Someone is bleeding the wall. The house is beginning to crumble! The baby's on fire. Oh dear! The zebra's are scaling the roof. The mice are beginning to scatter. Oh Mary!
You tied my shoes for me. You tied them tight. But the roof blew off, and you fell out of love.
I wasted time on you. I wasted socks. But the sun went down, and I fell out of love.
Mariel, would you love me if I was a liar?
Best song ever. It's really great for walking around in the winter time during the night. I just love the way the last line is full of so much emotion, it's amazing, great story.
Anything Richard touches, turns to gold.
Brilliant. Interesting twist on a love song, since I get the feeling the couple are mildly dysfunctional.
Simply put: I think we should break up.
Either that or: I'm leaving you for my mistress.
Both ways I'm leaving you.
Beautiful song.
