Dr. Yang (Album Version) Lyrics

Uh-oh

Hey, Dr. Yen
Chain smokin', chinese centenarian
Dot my back with pins
Connect the wires and plug me in
Oh, uh-oh

Hey, Love Master Z
Sexy online psychic overseas
When my bank card clears
Tell me things I wanna hear

Yeah, yeah!

I might be dyin', but maybe I got too much time
I can't stop my mind, it's running wild
And these false teeth and these plastic knees
That go squeak, squeak, squeak from the porch to the street

Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey!

Hey Dr. Jack!
Bend me like a pretzel til I crack
Pop my joints and bones
Beat me up and send me home

Hey!

I got too much time
Maybe then I might be dyin'
You got to help me foreign doctor
You got to help me fallin', fallin'!

Hey, Dr. Yang

It's "chain smoking Chinese centenarian," i.e., a 100+ year old.

And it's "bend me like a pretzel."

Thank you, dear. :)

I always figured 'chain smoking chinese symptom marrying' made little sense, lol.

I thought it was "symptomarian". Like one who diagnoses symptoms. But I guess that's not really a word?

I'm pretty sure it's "I need false teeth, I need plastic knees." That's what it sounds like to me, anyway.

In any case, yeah, this song is definitely making fun of New Age quackery. Segues nicely into "The Frown Song," with the gossipy rich woman struggling to get to shiatsu.

Yeah I agree with Archaia Sophia. I think it's definitely "I need false teeth, I need plastic knees".

Nothing to do with the Dr. Yang who Chairman Mao studied under, right?

Cover art for Dr. Yang (Album Version) lyrics by Ben Folds

hahah @archaia sophia has it right; new age quackery is an apt name for it. But, I think it's also about the people who seek comfort and meaning in such rituals and procedures. Lines like "you gotta help me I'm falling" emphasize how pathetic it is to seek salvation from crack pot doctors, gurus or others who care more about making money ('when my bank card clears') than helping people.
