I may be completely off on this, but the way I have always interpreted this song was that we are all already living in Heaven. White balloons are the clouds in the sky. The smoke machines are what are necessary to cover up the fact that we are already in Heaven.... Life is a ballroom, and we are all dancing. --Maybe a bit obscure, but this is just how I take it....I adore this song/album, needless to say.

I think "never seen but always sought after" makes more sense. i think he's struggling with the idea of God; if he does exist, he is a ghastly protector, laughing in my face. Everyone is crying out to him to save them from this waste. I don't know where the waves of rye fit in though. I am not schooled in agriculture.
"save me from this waves" doesn't make much grammatical sense.

haha, sorry for the mistakes. it was loosely translated. I actually myspace messaged Fred (from DoE) and he gave me some of the lines of lyrics I couldn't seem to figure out but he said him and Daniel decided not to release the lyrics because they thought it's more interesting when people have their own interpretation of them. :)
Maybe waves of rye has something to do with "The Catcher in the Rye". Meaning the trouble of dealing with the real cruel life. The Catcher is also sort of protector - thats how Holden understands it.
I interpreted this as reminiscing on a drunken escapade. There's constant references to being drunk and incoherent due to those "waves of rye" - especially in the lines: "He shakes me up like no other/Laughing in my face/He's mouthing off like a bastard/Drowning in those waves of rye." It repeatedly says "save me from this waste", almost like the singer is regretting how his drinking is causing his life to slip away.

Sometimes I can't believe how much people read into things on this site, but at the same time it is highly amusing that the first commenters didn't realize this song is about someone being a drunkass.
