I think it could mean that she is always worrying that something bad will happen when everything is okay. she is more at ease when something bad is going on becuase she figures it cant get much worse. shes afraid that the higher things are the lower they can go, and her friend/lover is always there to comfort her because he/she understands her and is there to help. i think this is one of those songs that have more than one meaning and those meanings are completely different to everyone who listens.
This song vividly expresses the constant need for tragedy, and how it's a preference to have things be more destroyed, dark, and upsetting rather than having light surround you all the time. Vanessa has expressed in concert how "melancholy can be so comforting sometimes". I love this song, it would've been cool to see it on Heroes and Thieves :3
