In Your Mother's Eyes Lyrics

I meet your mother in your doorway
And you both have the same blue eyes
There's a fire in her soul
but the flame is low
and it's burning her out.
And now we're walking down the hallway
and we tiptoe past your room
and when you climb out of bed
it's just like everybody said
I barely recongnized you.

Oh and even though your heart beats slower
and time is not your friend
I gotta let you know that you've got a long way to go, oh oh
When you feel struck down,
when there's no one around
when the hurt won't slow
I see your mother's eyes
see the flame inside
and I know I'll see you tomorrow.

Yeah it's okay to be afraid
We're all feeling the same
This isn't how it's supposed to go
And now you're sitting at a table
And you're smiling through the pain
You're surrounded by your friends
And I can't remember when
I heard you laugh so freely.

Oh and even though your heart beats slowly
and time is not your friend
I gotta let you know
that you've got a long way to go, oh oh
When you feel struck down
when there's one around
when the hurt won't slow
I see your mother's eyes
I see the flame inside
I know I'll see you

Tomorrow we can head down to Phoenix
the sun is always beating
write that in your book of goals
Tomorrow all the plans that you've been makin'
Tell God that He's mistaken
tell the darkness to go
tell him we said NO!
No! Just tell him we said no !!

Oh and even though your heart beats slow
it scares me to death 'cause you're not like the rest
And I know you'll go on
I've seen it
I have seen it
I have seen it
In your mother's eyes
I've seen it in your mother's eyes
I've seen it in your mother's eyes
There's a flame you can't disguise
I'll see you tomorrow...

It is indeed really beautiful, but also very very sad...I don't know for sure, but my guess is that Darren wrote it about a friend of his that died from AIDS. I've read that Darren was very touched by the death of a dear friend of his because of this desease and everytime I hear this song I picture this man in his dying bed and Darren visiting him and both knowing that the end of his life is close but still pretending that it's ok, still fighting to make it, dreaming of better times to come and making plans that simply won't happen, because there's no real "tomorrow"..it's so chilling. Just imagining that situation that Darren had the inmense talent to describe so vividly, the passion that he shown when he recorded it, and how ironic it is that the proximity of death in any way somehow gives you perspective of the few true important things that matter in life.
