Burning Pile Lyrics

All my style, all my grace
All I tried to save my face
All my guts, try to spill
All my holes, try to fill
All my money been a long time spent
On my drugs, on my rent
On my saving philosophy
It goes, one in the bank and the rest for me

It goes, all my troubles on a burning pile
All lit up and I start to smile
If I catch fire then I change my aim
Throw my troubles at the pearly gates

Oh, oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh
(Oh-oh-oh)

My mama, lonely maid
Got her buns in the oven and she never got laid
My papa, renaissance man
Sailed away and he never came back again

All my troubles on a burning pile
All lit up and I start to smile
If I catch fire then I change my aim
Throw my troubles at the pearly gates

Oh, oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh
All your woe begones be gone
I said all your troubles, you don't need a thing

feel the love,
All my troubles on a burning pile
All lit up and I start to smile
If I catch fire then I'll change my aim
Throw my troubles at the world again
It goes, all my troubles on a burning pile
All lit up and I start to smile
If I, catch fire then I'll take my turn
To burn and burn and burn

Ba, ba-ba-ba, ba, ba-ba-ba, ba-ba, ba, ba, ba, ba
Ba, ba-ba-ba, ba, ba-ba-ba, ba-ba, ba, ba, ba, ba
Ba, ba-ba-ba, ba, ba-ba-ba, ba-ba, ba, ba, ba, ba
Ba, ba-ba-ba, ba, ba-ba-ba, ba-ba, ba, ba, ba, ba
Ba, ba-ba-ba, ba, ba-ba-ba, ba-ba, ba, ba, ba, ba

could be. This song is the best off the album. He describes all his problems vaugly and some other people he worries about [eg. parents]. At the end of the chorus I think "If I catch fire then I change my aim, Throw my troubles at the pearly gates" it sounds like suicide? Pearly gates = heaven.

I don't think this song is referring to smoking weed or suicide, but I suppose it vaguely suggests those things. It's about running away from our problems because that's the only way we know how to deal with them. We learn from our parents, and unfortunately not all parents are good teachers.

My Interpretation

I agree with the weed comment :p

I also agree with the suicide comment. I like this song because of the unique and catchy melody, but also because of the lyrics, and I do rather enjoy pondering upon them. One thing I would add is that he throws his troubles to other places throughout the song, suggesting maybe that he merely separates or even compartmentalizes his troubles and worries so that they do not get the best of him (and of course, this can be achieved through some marijuana.)

The end talks about how if he catches fire then he'll "take [his] turn to burn burn and burn" suggesting that he maybe finally taking responsibility for all of his woes.

Song Meaning

I love this song.

"If I" should be replaced with "Live up" and its "all lit up and I start to smile".

This song could mean just getting rid of your troubles, or getting rid of them by burning down a bowl of weed.

i fixed the all lit up part, but it's not live up lol

Agreed. 'Live up' makes absolutely no sense in the context of the song, and it doesn't flow. I cover this song occasionally and "If I" comes out much more naturally.

Alternative interpretations:

  • I initially thought the words went "got a bun in the oven but she never got laid" and were a reference to the virgin Mary.
  • I feel this song could also be referring to burning all the things that remind you of your problems...like a big bonfire. But I'm sort of a pyro.

  • uh, i'm no expert, but last i checked you don't start a big ol' weed bonfire to get high

I think this song definitely has something to do with loneliness and not being able to overcome change and your problems. When he says 'throw my troubles at the pearly gates', it could mean suicide but it could also mean to let go of your troubles without death, of course. I think when he says 'I'll take my turn to burn and burn,' It could mean they would accept they're the problem, since he says he's tossing his troubles on the pile, he would accept that he is the problem because he knew that he is the reason he can't accept change or negative feelings in general.
