Evolutionary Sleeper Lyrics

Here's my hand you painted on
A circle fades inside a heart
Are you expected here
You whisper in my ear

So I wash my hands
'Till the water burns
A circle sits outside a door
Are you expected here
I whisper in your ear

I'm whole
I'm open
I'm starved
I'm broken
I'm lost and found
I'm an evolutionary sleeper

If letting go
means letting be
And the truth beyond the mind
is what I need
If letting go
means letting be
And the truth beyond the mind
is what I see

i think its about a dying man or man in a coma..evolutionary sleeper means somone who is evoloved beyond the human status and bounds of life.."open, starved, lost and found" i think it refers to coma between life and death then again he says evolutionary sleeper means after all these hardships he still an evolved man and "the truth beyond the mind is what i see and what i need" he may refer to the living soul after death

Song Meaning

I think this song is about a person questioning everything. Always. And it's a problem for the person because he or she isn't able to live in comfort. Everyday is a challenge. And the person is an "evolutionary sleeper", because he/she doesn't find any answer for those questions but the person is still searching all the time instead of searching for a solution of these thoughts and the problem behind. "A circle sits outside a door" maybe he or she tries hard to live in a world of "one's" own. Sorry for my bad English.

My Interpretation

The whole album is within the context of eastern philosophy/enlightenment, so this song is no different. The "circle" is a reference to the "life stream" of reincarnation. His incarnation begins as life "paints" a body over his soul (e.g. his hand). The circle (or life stream) is contained in, and fades inside his heart. Basically another way of saying we're dying from the very beginning. The first part of this song is about birth, figuring out what he is, and "life" is whispering in his ear, as if to say that he is not in control yet.

So he washes his hands - he's trying to purify himself and escape the worldly existence (enlightenment). The circle (or life stream) sits outside a door - behind death's door. He concludes the life cycle by whispering at death, just as life whispered to him during birth in the first verse.

The rest of the lyrics should make sense without much interpretation. I think the song title, and the last line "evolutionary sleeper" is actually him realizing that "he" is just life stream trapped inside a vehicle, which sleeps through all the chaos of the world. The bodies change, the universe changes, but the life stream never changes. It just sleeps.

I agree it's hard to understand. but there seems to be one theme through most of the album of something that has lost it's memory (and embracing this loss of self in many ways). In this song, "Are you expected here You whisper in my ear" seems to be a direct reference to not knowing who they are, where they belong, are they known by others where they are going? I would also suggest it's monologue as opposed to actually conversing with another. It's the inner doubt. From the title I would also assume that the memory loss is somehow advantageous, perhaps a horrible event occurred which caused amnesia.

Maybe the person isn't so much one particular person, but.. how about a whole race of beings who have within the past 5000 years come to consciousness and are currently wondering their origins, no so much amnesia, but an in general lack of knowledge. The evolutionary sleeper could be the last 3 billion years of evolution if you would consider not having a brain "sleeping". He wants to know the "truth beyond the mind", not what we have made up for ourselves, religion and ect, but the actual origins. This song goes well with Integral Birth, i believe that song is...

"I've worked a lot doing uh, working with people who were terminally ill, and I would play guitar for some people. And that to me in some ways probably was more, felt like the most important thing I've ever done as far as providing someone with peace before they die" -Paul Masvidal

I think that comment was quite related to this song specifically

To me the term Evolutionary Sleeper pertains to the spirit sleeping between incarnations. Perhaps I read too much into it, but it feels relevent
