Voices Lyrics

in this silent hour, i can hear them:
"pray to the mother,
what the mother doesn't love, my son."
in the blackened earth, lay my secrets.
the hounds of hell know everything.
at the moon they howl,
i couldn't wait, i get away,
i hide away from the light.
still they smell my fear,
and they will hunt me like the animal i've been.

cut, cut, cut, cut a hole in the night.
the voices of the innocent are coming to life.

in the graceless world, i was graceless.
i'm just a murderer 'cause murder was my only chance.
go on, wretch it out, am i faithless?
the ears of god hear everything.
and he hears them still,
every cry, every breath,
every limb that i've slain.
just to save myself,
how can god show mercy how us merciless to them?

cut, cut, cut, cut a hole in the night.
the voices of the innocent are coming to life.

"your greatest sin, is not the abortion that you've asked forgiveness for, or the adultery, or whatever it is that you did in your life, in a past that you're ashamed of, that keeps hounding you... your greatest sin is not that, your greatest sin in not believing god's word when god says you're forgiven! your greatest sin is unbelief. you want to repent of something, friend? stop repenting of sins you've already repented of, and repent of your unbelief."

the voices of the innocent are coming to life.

I always thought this song went along with their other songs in referring to WWI and WWII. I figured this was like from the point of view from a nazi regretting killing all the jews.... Personally, that's just me.

I loved the preaching bit at the end, though, it was surprising, but in a good way.

There are a few wrong lyrics...

"What the mother doesn't love, my son" should be "BUT the mother doesn't love, my son"

"go on, wretch it out, am I faithless" should be "though I'm wretched, am I faithless?"

"how can God show mercy how us merciless to them" should be "How can God show mercy, I was merciless to them."

Also, just because a song has Christian words, meanings, undertones, etc doesn't make it anymore brainwashing than any other song in the world. I like how when a song talks about God, repentance, Jesus, faith, unbelief/belief, basically anything "Christian", it's considered "brainwashing". </sarcasm> Maybe you should look up the meaning of brainwash. Here let me do it for you.... Merriam-Webster's Dictionary defines Brainwashing as " a forcible indoctrination to induce someone to give up basic political, social, or religious beliefs and attitudes and to accept contrasting regimented ideas"

I don't see how a band singing about their personal beliefs is FORCIBLY inducing someone to give up their beliefs. Now if someone were to strap you down to a chair, put headphones on you and MAKE you listen to Christian songs over and over and over...then yes, it would be brainwashing.

Just my two cents....

Come on dude, it's a Christian band. Chill.

The song's about letting go of the things you've done and not worrying about it and asking for forgiveness every day. The "brainwashing" is just talking about the meaning of the song and that unbelief is the only thing you need to be sorry for. They're not trying to shove it down your throat.

I like how this guy complains about a song that has Christian lyrics when the song comes from a Christian band. It's like he doesn't expect it.

Often times, people ask God for forgiveness for the things they have done, and they go on living feeling the guilt. They know God is forgiving, but they can't believe they are forgiven. God forgives like no human, like nobody else. His mercy is un-matchable. But to not believe in His forgiveness is to not have strong faith in God. "Lord, help my unbelief"

Jesus told his apostles that whose sins you forgive are forgiven, thus creating the sacrament of Penance. Today in the Catholic Church, that same sacrament is celebrated, and Catholics know that when the priest says the words of absolution after the penitent has confessed his sins and made a sincere Act of Contrition, the penitent's sins are forgiven. And as crazy as it seems that anything can be forgiven that easily, they must leave with confidence and faith in God's divine mercy, knowing that they are forgiven, and determined not to commit those same sins again.

But to do all this and not believe you are forgiven is to commit the sin of doubt and not believing in God with strong faith.

first of all...I think the lines are "Though I am wretched, I am not faithless" instead of "go on, wretch it out, am i faithless?"

This song really speaks to me after I read the Scarlet Letter where the main character has committed adultery and is forced to wear a scarlet letter "A" on her dress the rest of her life. The whole book is about her constant torment and turmoil. She believes the "A" is penance but she finds that she is not rid of her guilt. In the song, during the part with the message, he is saying that the greatest sin is not accepting the saving grace of Jesus Christ and leaving behind the sin. God has already forgiven the sinner, but it is our job to accept that forgiveness and leave the sin behind.

this song is about god's healing power and how if he can forgive a murderer he can forgive anyone.

they're talking about bad things that have happened to innocent people because of them. "the voices of the innocent are coming to life." "in the graceless world, i was graceless. i'm just a murderer 'cause murder was my only chance." he did something bad (murder?) and hes hoping god will forgive him? thats what i think anyway.

My Interpretation

Wow. I never thought about that. Now the speech part makes more sense to me.

I think this is about a soldier- he only killed on the battlefield to keep from being killed. 'in the graceless world, i was graceless. i'm just a murderer 'cause murder was my only chance.' He feels guilt over all those he has killed. And I think it's 'every LAMB that I've slain' because of that metaphor of God as the shephard and us the lambs.
