This song has my vote for: Best Rock Instrumental of 2008. Who's with me?!?!?

This song is so badass!

"I think they wised up and listened to the fans"

Saroknight, you're an imbecile. If they listened to "fans" like you, they wouldn't be Metallica.

Anyway, I am pleased they came out with another amazing instrumental. Reminds me of the melody of Orion and the structure of Ktulu.

@OrionOfKtulu Youre so right. the MAIN reason Metallica is my favorite badn is because of there ADAMANCY about doing whatever the fuck they want, and thinking about what the band needs. they neeeded to make albums like load, reload, and st anger. this album is a refined comeback to the metallica that we all love, but the difference is that this comeback was on THEIR terms, not the millions of fans wanting more thrash related stuff

It seems this tune is about a person contemplating suicide but then decides to redeem himself...hence the total change of musical tone at the end...he/she lives and makes something if his/her self...great piece of work!

I think that it speaks volumes of a band when people can get meanings from songs that don't even have lyrics!

The start of the song is very gloomy and powerful, very heavy, as the subject is contemplating suicide.

My favourite part of this song is at 4.29 when I think that the subject is looking back upon their life and deciding maybe it is worth fighting for.

When Robs bass comes in at 5.30 it is final decision time, make your mind up!

The solos to me signify his two options left to the subject. The first solo is darker than the second in my opinion, maybe the death side with the second being life?

The breakdown comes and I think this is where the new lease on life comes too, with the music getting stronger as the subjects will does.

Maybe the repetative ending signifies the repetitive nature of life itself, with the drums over the top being the various different challenges we encounter?

Or maybe this is all bullshit and the song is a just a shit hot instrumental with no meaning other than to bring an immense album to a close?

We shall never know for sure ;-)

The first instrumental written without Cliff. Somtimes the instrumentals are the best on the album, for this song that is arguably true. I like this song a lot and it contains some of the elements from To live is to Die and Orion. I'm so happy that Metallica decided to resurect an old tradition.

The middle part, starting at about 6:10, is great. Favorite part of the album.

Considering that the lyrics of the album tend to deal mainly with death or being consumed by some evil, this could be a musical interpretation of finding (drum roll, please) redemption at the end of your struggles. The light at the end of the tunnel if you will.

Also, did anybody notice Lars' drum solo toward the end? Even though it was a good drum bit, I could help but chuckle considering how so many people have always bashed him as being a bad drummer.

Which is something I've never understood. Sure, he's no Mike Portnoy, but his drumming as always sounded good to my ears (except on St. Anger, of course).
