I left our house without a clue
And left New York City, girl, without you
But the sun does shine in this place some days
And even when there's clouds, there isn't always rain

I'll stow away my greys
In a padlocked case in a padlocked room
Only to be released when I sing all the songs I wrote about you
This is the last one I'll do

Now I'm free in parentheses
And I'm not sure what I ought to do with it
It sits in the house, bright eyes and raised hands
If I ignore its advances then the hand goes down

I'll stow away my greys
In a padlocked case and in a padlocked room
Only to be released when I sing all the songs I wrote about you
Oh, this is the last one I'll do

I feel better and better and worse and then better
Than ever, than ever, than ever
I feel much better, and better, and worse and then better
Than ever, than ever, than ever, than ever

I'll stow away my greys
In a padlocked case and in a padlocked room
Only to be released when I see you walking around with someone new
This is the last song, this is the last song
This is the last song I'll write about you

    Song Meaning

he is saying that he had finally gotten over a girl. he had set aside all the memories and songs about her, "in a padlocked case and in a padlocked room" Now that he has accepted her as history and done with, he has come to terms with himself. them not being together anymore is not bad. "when there's a cloud there isnt always rain." it just is. before, he felt bad about the breakup, but now he feels better. the chapter of his life which she is part of is done "this is the last song i'll write about you." the point is, he moved on.

sorry for going on about that whole thing for so long, but i wanted to make sure my entire point was down, though looking at it now, it looks pretty redundant. and obvious. oh well...

This song is a sequel to "Snake", the writer spoke of it in an interview. Snake doesn't make any references to New York, but it's about him traveling to NY to meet his soon-to-be-ex with nothing but himself and an IKEA draft excluder (snake).

It doesn't work out. He leaves NY. And this song comes out.

Personally, I feel like this song is an attempt to feel better, given that he's essentially just had to face the reality of the break up. The real pain hasn't hit yet (it does in the subsequent songs). Theres a certain exhileration after a breakup, regardless of how you feel afterwards.

...or the song was written later than the others, and was just placed in the front of the album due to the sound. :)

when your final act to a loved one is the last loved song you'll ever write about her tells me that this is a song about depressed feelings after a few cups of coffee. the energy of the music is as if a man has recovered from trapped feelings of love for someone he's since separated from.

clouds seems to refer to clinical depression; and in the lyrics the author is indicating that some light (not feeling as depressed) does make it thru the clouds of his depression from time to time.

The writer confesses he is imprisoned by his depression with the line "now I am free in parenthesis". Parenthesis implies being locked behind barriers. So when you are free and yet imprisoned at the same time, that cannot be great feeling.

I think this song is the author say he's happy despite being in utter misery.

Both as a standalone and as part of the DSOTS album, you can take this lyric as read. As a matter of public record, Jourgensen's drug intake was legendary even in the 1980s. By the late 90s, in his own words, he was grappling with massive addiction issues and had lost almost everything: friends, spouse, money and had nearly died more than once. "Dark Side of the Spoon" is a both funny & sad title for an album made by a musical genius who was losing the plot; and this song is a message to his fans & friends saying he knows it. It's painful to listen to so I'm glad the "Keith Richards of industrial metals" wised up and cleaned up. Well done sir.

Standing On The Edge Of Summer

In regards to the meaning of this song: Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.” That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.

Fast Car
Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.
