Ion Square Lyrics
Ion square, perspex swings
I breathe out, you breathe in
Permanent midnight
Our love, our love
How we've come to depend
On each other to the end
The space between us has disappeared
You finish my, you finish my words for me
I remember how it began
So many great days in a row
Barefoot on Bishopsgate
Trying to find Blake's grave
If we could stay like this in a silver foil
Trapped in amber for a life
Permanent midnight
Our love, our love
I carry your heart here with me
I carry it in my heart
I carry your heart with me
I carry it in my heart
Who said unbroken happiness
Is a bore, is a bore?
Who said it, my love?
I don't mind it anymore, anymore
And I reach out a hand over your side of the bed
Pull that blanket over your shoulders exposed to the night
And the hunger of those early years will never return
But I don't mind, I don't mind
Because I love my mind when I'm fucking you
Slowed down to a crawl
Years of crime and the bread line
Have not at all dimmed your shine
So let's stay in, let the sofa be our car
Let's stay in, let the TV be our stars
I found my dancing shoes but they don't fit
All the bright lights do is bore me
They bore me
I carry your heart here with me
I carry it in my heart
I carry your heart with me
I carry it in my heart
I breathe out, you breathe in
Permanent midnight
Our love, our love
How we've come to depend
On each other to the end
The space between us has disappeared

My favourite on the album. IMO the best bit is:
"So let's stay in, let the sofa be our car Let's stay in, let the TV be our stars I found my dancing shoes but they don't fit All the bright lights do is bore me They bore me"
I think this is great because it's like she said "Let's go out tonight to a club" and Kele says "No, I want to stay in and spend time with you" and makes excuses about his dancing shoes... Amazing
Also Kele famously has a stutter, so the "You finish my, you finish my words for me" is part stutter, part about the stutter and part how she completes him"
As samfancypants said it is very sad. A song about how happy you once were is the saddest...
Kele is the best!
Brilliant observation on the real life stutter, and its even deeper meaning here.

Also, on Weekend in the City, his solution to stuttering seems to be cocaine, "you make my tongue loose, I am hopeful and stutter free". Nice to see a change here.

There are so many amazing things going on in this song! I've noticed some comments regarding sexual orientation because on WITC Kele discussed that he was being honest thoughts or inclinations we all have felt as some point, in different increments, he just decided to be transparent and write them, instead of abstract.
On that point, Its interesting the title is Ion Square, where ion bonds are the bonding of a metal and a non metal, opposites attracting. It leads me to think this song is about a girl. Also, one substance being strong like metal and the other softer, seems to be more of a male/female metaphore.
This song is so beautiful.
About the line: 'cause I love my mind when I'm fucking you' i don't take it offensive, but kind of humorous. I think that's the point. While most of the song is sentimental, soft, romantic, this line shows the other side of relationships which is often fun and spontaneous, as sex often is. The line shows how he is even laughing at himself for how free he is with his lover.
I wish I could write songs this sincere and moving. wow.
I think that "I love my mind when I'm fucking you Slowed down to a crawl" should be read together. So it means that he stops thinking and surrenders to her completely.

It's about a guy. Kele is gay. He came out in Butt magazine. Opposites attracting doesn't have to be about gender, they could be different types of people, it can be about racism, so many different things other than gender. So no. It's not about a girl. I really do hate when people erase Kele's homosexuality, it's really insulting to take him being gay out of the equation and toss it away because it doesn't apply to straight people.

@lostjournal Ion Square is a place in Soho, that's what Kele is referring to - a lot of that album references places in London. So I think a part of the choice of title is about his queer identity. I don't know where you are but Soho is like the gay capital of London and a lot of us in the London queer scene are out constantly and there is a feeling, I think, when you're a younger queer, of being out looking for something and crawling those same clubs and bars etc and he's saying he doesn't want that...

The line isn't very fitting with the overall tone of the song, but that's why it's such a good lyric. It's bold and startling; it's perfect for conveying what Kele is saying in this song. It's just such a powerful line.
how is 'cause i love my mind when im fucking you' a bad line? or awkward? just cause he swears? lol. the songs building up all the way through, and then hes expressing his passion, cause the excitements gone, but the passion is still there... :S
ooh! and the prayer reference: "lord give me... dancing feet" and then in this one: "i found my dancing shoes but they didn't fit all the bright lights do is bore me"... yeah....
aw man i wanna cry! but i wont cos im a man
this song = perfection <3
IMO the line 'Cause I love my mind, when i'm fucking you' completes the song; all of it is so romantic, so soft without any sexual passion, which seriously isn't possible in a relationship. The line strikes a perfect balance between love and desire.
This song actually makes me cry, I absolutely adore it. Bloc Party are fucking amazing.
This song is about someone being in a relationship for a long time and still being in love and happy even though they don't do the same things that they use to. Their relationship isn't the same as it was in the beginning where they would go out dancing and go out to places now he would rather stay in. They do not have as much sex as they use to but he's really fine with that because he doesn't feel the need or the want to have sex all the time. They are a part of each other and basically they're happy or at least he is they don't really have downs just ups in the relationship. ("Ion Square" representing the attraction of each other)
I absolutely adore this song. It's pretty clear that it's about a great time in a relationship or when a relationship is really working out.
