Holly Lyrics
Holly was the kind of girl the cameras liked
She could play the part of poet that's kept behind the mic
And whilst I've always dreamed of making it in Hollywood
I know if she'd had a second chance then Holly could
And I did all that I could to help
Yeah I've done all that I can to help
By the time that she was twenty she had driven insane
On her way back out she crashed straight into crack cocaine
And whilst I'd never once condemned it, I did not agree
That's why I think Holly failed to fall in love with me
But I did all that I could to help
Yeah I've done all that I can to help
I laid down my anchor
And I said let's take a stand
'Cause I'm leaving only when
I've done all that I can
She cleaned her act up burnt her shackles and chains
And she rid herself of men who used their fists for their brains
And she cotched upon a couch within the neighbors' space
Til she'd saved enough to pay the lease on her own place
And I did all that I could to help
Yeah, I've done all that I can to help
She used to brush past all the students of art
She said they're masters of their craft but I am far too smart
And I've always fancied studying humanities
And she passed with first-class honours in philosophy
And I did all that I could to help
Yeah I did all that i could to help
I laid down my anchor
And I said let's take a stand
'Cause I'm leaving only when
I've done all that I can
A car was being naughty down a one-way street
And it crushed her brittle bones right from her head to her feet
And as I knelt over her body and I prayed to god
I lost faith in everything that ever has been of
But I did all that I could to help
Yeah I did all that I could to help
I laid down my anchor
And I said let's take a stand
And I'm leaving only when
I've done all that I can
She could play the part of poet that's kept behind the mic

i really love this song, one of my favourite things released recently in this genre. can i make a couple of corrections though?:
aside from that, i think you've got the whole thing about right. i was thinking about adding these lyrics myself a while ago, but never got round to it.
to repeat myself, this is a genuinely beautiful song, really one of the best things i've heard in a while.
I adore this song, and Jay Jay.
Where it said 'odd', as highlighted by anonymiad I'd always assumed it to be 'told' or 'taught', although this could just be me fitting the lyrics to my assumed meaning.
Anyway, the first time I heard it, I shed a tear. It's gorgeous.
Every time I hear this song, it reminds me of "Lua" by Bright Eyes. The soft, almost whispered singing. The slight quiver in his voice. The way he places emphasis on some of the words. And the over all sadness invoked by it all. I don't know... they're both beautiful songs.
Just to clarify what the last word is in the song/verse:
I lost faith and everything that ever has been 'of'
I've listened to it tons of times (through high quality headphones), and I'm certain this is what it is (and it's more obvious in the iTunes version) -- I think he should've used taught since you shouldn't end sentences with prepositions and it would fit the meaning just the same ;)
Beautiful song, and a nice one to play on the acoustic for friends after a night at the pub ;)
Cheers, Bobby
