Nothing Ever Happened Lyrics

Only when I dream but there's no way out
You learn to talk, you learn to shout
Focus on depth that was never there
Eliminate what you can't repair

Nothing ever happened to me
Nothing ever happened to me
Nothing ever happened to me
Life just passing, flash right through me

Sleep through the winter to awake in spring,
Adjust your eyes to the state of things
Focus on depths that was never there
Nothing's easy nothing's fair

Nothing ever happened to me
Nothing ever happened to me
Nothing ever happened to me
Life just passing, flash right through me

I never, saw it coming
waiting for something, for nothing
I never, saw it coming
waiting for something, for nothing

Bradford said that when he wrote this song he had in mind a woman who has kids, gets left by her husband, raises the kids as best she can, they grow to resent her and dont talk to her, she works a crappy job at wal-mart, and one day gets hit by a mack truck and dies. Hence, "Nothing ever happened to me".

The beginning of the second stanza definitely is:

"sleep through the winter, awake in spring adjust your eyes to the state of things..."

phenomenal song

I don't disagree with the above comments, but I have a different take.

I feel like the song is about being passive. About expecting things to happen, waiting for them to fall into your lap. "Nothing ever happened to me, life just passing, flash right through me". People just sit around waiting for things to happen, and nothing happens. Their life passes by them. And in the last line, it's the same thing: "I never saw it coming, waiting for something, for nothing."

Best song on Microcastles hands down. I love it in the beginning when the bass changes, awesomeness!! Anyway I think this song is about trying to get a grasp of the fact that we are never truly in control of our lives things just happen to us as we move forward in life even if those things seem like nothing. The first and last lines says it all. Only when I dream but there's no way out, waiting for something, for nothing. Such an amazing song.

This song builds and peaks so wonderfully. I could listen to it endlessly for the rest of my days.

It might be true that Bradford Cox doesn't write lyrics with a deeper meaning in general. But that doesn't eliminate the possibility to interpret them in different ways. I can definitley see a sort of spiritual/personal development theme in these words.

I'm pretty sure it's "Sleep through the winter awake in spring" not "see through the wind to awakened stream". Great song in any case. To me the song seems to be about anhedonia, or the kind of depression that only allows you to feel sorry for yourself. "Eliminate what you can't repair" might be a suicide metaphor.

I hear "Eliminate what you can't repair" not the lemonade thing.
