Gonna disagree with most people here. I think this is faith, or rather a lack thereof.

Remember, she's Norwegian. Her English is damned good, but I think she meant to say something more like...
"Oh God, I can't believe in you Just because I'm afraid you're REAL"
This is directed to god. She's saying that fear of punishment isn't enough to make her believe in him.
They say that most Norwegians go to church 3 times in their life, and three of those times they're carried. (Baptism, wedding, funeral).
rafngard, I really like your interpretation. This could very easily be about lack of faith in God, but it could also be about lack of faith in relationships. My favorite lyrics are the ambiguous ones, because they can mean whatever we want them to mean. They're written for us, the listeners, afterall.

I love this song, it's heartbreaking. I think it's about trying to trust someone new after you've been fucked about in the past. Like, finding it hard to believe in love after having your vision of it destroyed before.
I can't believe this has no comments, wow. I think this song is about possibly trying to stop yourself from falling in love with another because maybe they were wronged in their past relationship....or they just have trust issues.

I also think this is about religion, though mainly I'm only saying that because I feel I can relate so much to the song. I'm a born and raised Catholic, but I often don't want to believe in G*d because He terrifies me.
