The Blue Route Lyrics
You keep replaying through the days
That have brought you to this place
You shine your shoes and shave your face
Throw on a suit
You used to be some kind of joke
And all the depths you’ve come to know
You wandered down an open road and you kept going
What happened to you
What happened to you
What happened to you
At just a quarter past the hour
Chatting up some friends of yours
You were standing side by side under the moon
Eleven sparrows on the line
A hundred fireflies outside
Your tired eyes were open wide and you kept going
What happened to you
What happened to you
What happened to you
Eleven blackbirds in the sky
A hundred fireflies for miles
Your tired eyes were open wide
What could you do
You keep replaying through the days
That have brought you to this place
You wandered down an open road and you kept going
What happened to you
What happened to you
What happened to you
That have brought you to this place
You shine your shoes and shave your face
Throw on a suit
You used to be some kind of joke
And all the depths you’ve come to know
You wandered down an open road and you kept going
What happened to you
What happened to you
Chatting up some friends of yours
You were standing side by side under the moon
Eleven sparrows on the line
A hundred fireflies outside
Your tired eyes were open wide and you kept going
What happened to you
What happened to you
A hundred fireflies for miles
Your tired eyes were open wide
What could you do
You keep replaying through the days
That have brought you to this place
You wandered down an open road and you kept going
What happened to you
What happened to you

i see self-reflection too. great song about stepping back and taking stock of your life. very under-rated album - might be their best work overall.
This is a great song, and this album is a masterpiece - my favorite of the year!
I think in this song "What happened to you?" is referring to an improvement of some kind in this person, as opposed to a change for the worse, which it usually means and which I initially thought.
I see self-reflection. Written in the second person, but I think the "you" is the narrator.
In that sense I don't think of "what happened to you" as a positive or negative question. More of a sudden realization question. As if one day the narrator woke up, looked in the mirror, and said "man, what happened to you."
"It used to be some kind of joke And all the debts you’ve come to know"
"Eleven blackbirds in the sky A hundred fireflies for miles Your tired eyes are open wide What could you do But keep replaying through the days That have brought you to this place You wandered down an open road and you kept going"
I see this song as shock of self-awareness after a time of despair and aimless wandering.
