Canadian Girl Lyrics
You are the morning
I am the night
I was the only one left at the right time
And only I still call you mine
Only I'm still hanging on
Blown by strong wind, but it/here we fear (?)
All that you said to me is still so very clear
So take my hand
The players in the band
They can always find
Always find some number that we know
You’ll miss me when I’m gone
But the happy music will carry on
You are the morning
I am the night
I was the only one left at the right time
And only I still call you mine
Only I'm still hanging on
I am the night
I was the only one left at the right time
Only I'm still hanging on
All that you said to me is still so very clear
So take my hand
The players in the band
They can always find
Always find some number that we know
But the happy music will carry on
You are the morning
I am the night
I was the only one left at the right time
Only I'm still hanging on

The night's come to an end. Everyone save for a few people have gone home. The place is dim and has foggy windows. It's just you and the girl you've spent the evening with. You might be standing out by the door, or sitting in a booth. Maybe it's snowing or raining outside. Either way your faces are growing closer, then you pause, silent, just looking at one another. The kiss is as inevitable as the morning meeting the night.
That's what I think the song is about.
perhaps, besides the fighting and dislike between two people, presumably a couple. it boils down to who was there for you, and who will always be there for you in the end.
Blown by strong wind, but it/here we fear (?) All that you said to me is still so very clear So take my hand The players in the band They can always find Always find some number that we know
in the event of a cataclysmic argument. the simplest of things, like holding hands can represent so much in a relationship, especially that of a seasoned but dying one
Youll miss me when Im gone But the happy music will carry on You are the morning I am the night I was the only one left at the right time
despite the inevitable, the happy memories and feelings that were once shared with that very special person will never be replaced. you are the morning and i am the night. plain and simple. feelings were there and you cannot deny them. but in the end, you were the only one who cared enough to stick around for the other lovers happiness.
And only I still call you mine Only I'm still hanging on
and by knowing you the were the one who cared the most, she and he both know, because of this "i can still call you mine" this song parallels my own life
It's about the role timing and chance play in love. We like to think of love as two people destined for each other, like love will find them no matter what. The truth is, love, as with everything else is a matter of chance. Being the "only one left at the right time"
One of their best songs. Sublime, like all their work. I will try to give my two cents about it, though all your comments are quite interesting as well!
In my opinion, this is one of those songs/poems that have a self-explanatory first paragraph.
"You are the morning I am the night I was the only one left at the right time"
That's it. You are the morning and I am the night. We are two very different people, or at least different enough to not fit what most people understand when talking about "perfect love" -- two very similar people, that support each other and that their similarities make them perfect for one another. But that's bullshit many times, and as BornIndie said, it's just about the serendipity of being the one left at the right time, which btw is the same topic as in "Love is Luck". We are not that alike, but we fit for a while and we found each other stranded and made something good out of it, and we never cared too much about how a good match we were or not. That's the tenet through the whole song, IMO.
"And only I still call you mine Only I'm still hanging on"
Well, doesn't matter how good we were for one another, I am still hanging on for you, cause after all I am still in love. And it looks like you're not feeling that anymore.
"Blown by strong wind, but it/here we fear (?) All that you said to me is still so very clear So take my hand The players in the band They can always find Always find some number that we know"
This is the most metaphoric paragraph. In my opinion, and taking into account what the following one says, it just appeals for optimism. The relationship is clearly over, but hold my hand and don't fear, as the players in the band will always find some number that we both know well -- love will eventually happen again, as it happened with us, just don't give too much thought about it and be happy.
"You’ll miss me when I’m gone But the happy music will carry on You are the morning I am the night I was the only one left at the right time"
Well, quite clear. You (and I) will miss each other when we leave, but again, we gotta look to the future with optimism. Too different, yet too lucky.
"And only I still call you mine Only I'm still hanging on"
Yep. If it wasn't clear enough that I still miss you :).
LOVE this song.
@srsomeday what do you love about the song? What do the lyrics mean to you?

As do I. I'm surprised nobody else has commented on it, one of my favorites of you & me, but then again, the album as a whole is just so fantastic. Anyhow, I think the lyrics are quite self explanatory, with that said, they set the mood oh so perfectly with the music.
Haven't tried to get my head around this one. The utter romance of the soundwaves is enough for me. One of their best songs. I get the chills when I hear the horn section. SO good, man...
"Blown by strong winds, but if you fear All that you said to me is still so very clear" :)
