I think he's saying he's always played it safe when it comes to love, but when he met this girl he forgot everything he's tried to hide from. He lost her so now he only can remember what being with her was like. I think the title part is saying all of his life, his head has been in the clouds and he's been dreaming always. He realizes all along the dream he's dreamt has been her. He's fallen for her and it's the worst because she doesn't feel the same.

He's so desperate for that sleep because she can always be fresh on his mind throughout the night, even when she's not physically present.
