the guy is in love with this woman who he's so far away from & they can only have an electronic relationship because of their distance. "And I will love you in reality and dreams" the reality means his love is legit, but the dreams part means he dreams about kissing and loving this woman. however, he knows that their relationship most likely won't last BECAUSE of the distance, and when they are through, she will find someone who can kiss her and hold her and love her the way that he can't. she will find a guy to be there for her physically as well as emotionally. despite the demise of their relationship and her moving on, he still will love her forever. "it kills him to know" that she will move on, and i take it as he will die of a broken heart, or the loss is killing him, or he kills himself. "there will always be a man underground who loves you." this is kind of plainly writen that he's dead, and he died loving her, so he will eternally love her. this song is so riddled with desire and loss it's ridiculous. i guess that's why im in love with this song, because i am in the same exact boat.
Because it seems to be about a long-distance relationship conducted largely through the typed word, I always heard the line as "An 'x' is the best I can do'; IE, he'll never kiss her for real, and can only type the letter to represent the action. Then again, I don't have access to the lyrics that came with the album, but pretending is nice.
I checked the album cover and it does say "an x" instead of "an ex". But its hard to determine that from just hearing it I guess. Also, maybe they left it ambigious so that it would have a dual meaning? Like they do not think there is any hope left at all for their relationship.

i think the song is about an affair. like an internet-affair. hence the title, "second lover".

This is a lyric from Noah and the Whale’s song ‘Second Lover’. That whole song makes me cry everytime I listen to it, but it’s one of my favourite songs at the same time.
But I was thinking about this line of the song, and how many people there are whose hands I’ve wanted to hold and never could…I can't believe noone has commented on this song, it's one my favourites on the album.
i love this song. it kinda makes me think of an internet relationship. 'And though I don't know your real name Your real age, or your shoe size I will leave this bedroom chair And this keyboard behind' & he's jealous because he isnt there for her in reality and all he can use is 'x's' like kisses, but he cant really kiss her. im not sure about the end bit, i dont think its depressing enough for him to kill himself :) but it kinda makes sense.
One of my favorite songs off the album. I really like the metronome ticking in the background, does anyone find it to be a bit hypnotic?
