Remember When (Used to Be Used to It)

here 16 years later, but i still love this band & this song feels like an ode to the gnawing need to escape back into the past after a loss in the present, like a broken friendship or death.

(You were running out of lies to keep me under Afraid of your back hands So to speak, you had me shaking at the knees)

there are no more reasons or excuses anyone can come up with to soften the blow of what they've told the singer. they're trying to be subtle and make it sound better, but he's already realized the truth.

(And if you would've seen me at my best Would it have changed anything at all?)

the singer clings on and wonders if there was anything he could've done, even passively, to have taken responsibility and changed the outcome. maybe this person would've held on just a little longer if they could see how good things would've been if they stayed picture-perfect.

(The door was always open But still not nearly enough to let me in I was always loud enough just for you to hear me You never caught the wind)

as close as he had gotten to this person, and as much he had tried to do, he still couldn't break down the walls that would've kept them around. this person's struggles were so solidified in their mind that they were always out of reach, and helping them see things through was seemingly impossible, even with the singer by their side.

(And I'm still waiting for a sign Or just a win-win situation Can I hear it one more time? Without the sound of devastation setting in)

despite everything in mind, the singer's still holding out hope for a miracle that this isn't the end. there has to be something beyond this, a way for things to turn back around and change in the blink of an eye; a feeling he can't let go of, regardless of how many times he hears the truth and how many times it hurts him all the same.

The guy’s lover did something (Probably cheated or lied about something else or of the sort) ["You were running out of lies to keep me under/Afraid of your back hands"] behind his back, early in the relationship ["It was out of its time, it was undiscovered"]. The man finds out and first wonders if he had done something to maybe cause this ["And if you would've seen me at my best/Would it have changed anything at all?"]. He then confronts his lover about it, and he is scared to know the answer ["Your initial reply hit me undercover;So to speak, you had me shaking at the knees"]. He most likely loves this person deeply and part of him doesn’t want to hear that he has been lied too. Now that he knows the truth ["Your initial reply hit me undercover/When I lost my head to it/It was out of its time, it was undiscovered/As I caught my breath again"] he doesn’t know what to do next ["But I don't know the way out of this mess/No, I don't know the way out of this mess;And I'm still waiting for a sign/Or just a win-win situation"]. He thinks maybe if he had been stronger, or at his best["And if you would've seen me at my best Would it have changed anything at all?;Now watch me break/Breakdown this time, this time again"], he could have prevented what had happened. He remembers those times when they were happy together, and thinks about how they never had to remember when times were better ["Remember when -- we never had to remember when times were better/When times were better than this/We never had to remember when times were better/When times were better than this"].
He tries to stay strong, and asks for the same answer, but without the sound of that person’s devastation (at the fact that they got caught) setting in ["Can I hear it one more time?/Without the sound of devastation setting in"].

i can't believe this has no comments! my absolute favorite on the EP.

I don't know if it's 'lies' or 'lines' and I think it might be 'black hands' like her hands are dirty? Anyways this song is amazing, so catchy. I think it's about a girl and a guy who obviously like each other and obviously should be together, but neither of them wants to put in the effort, so they are kind of at a standstill. The relationship has gotten harder to maintain and they wish it was easy like it used to be.

I love the, "the door was always open, but never quite nearly enough to let me in".
