Church Tongue Lyrics
Everyday I wake up
My pillow's made up
I'm tired of always following you around
You're such a faker
And when you meet your maker
I know he's gunna beat you into the ground
Do you remember me at all?
I can't help feeling like I'm talking to the wall
I'm just wondering do you remember me at all?
They've got my picture up in all my family's halls
So we don't see eye to eye anymore
And no we don't see wrong from right like before
No we don't see eye to eye anymore
And no we don't see wrong from right like before
na na na na na...
Movers and the shakers
That fill the papers
I'm tired of always following them around
You're a heartbreaker
An undertaker
I know you're gunna place me into the ground
Do you remember me at all?
I can't help feeling like I'm talking to the wall
I'm just wondering do you remember me at all?
They've got my picture up in all my family's halls
So we don't see eye to eye anymore
And no we don't see wrong from right like before
No we don't see eye to eye anymore
And no we don't see wrong from right like before
Like before, like before.
na na na na na...
My pillow's made up
I'm tired of always following you around
You're such a faker
And when you meet your maker
I know he's gunna beat you into the ground
I can't help feeling like I'm talking to the wall

no comments? this is one of my favorite kigh songs, a great album closer.
to me it seems to be about a listless marriage or perhaps divorce. i'm leaning towards the former. or it could be along the same lines as easy tiger with losing a friend to drug addiction, but the title "church tongue" suggests that my first guess was more accurate.
someone that's realized that the love and passion that was once there has faded away for at least one of them, if not both. maybe there's constant fights ("we don't see eye to eye anymore") and perhaps one of them/both of them is engaging in a self-destructive activity or even being unfaithful (we don't see wrong from right like before). maybe it's just about people growing in different directions and not being right for each other anymore, but if that's the case then it doesn't really explain the lines "you're such a faker" and "you're a heartbreaker". he's tired of his unfulfilling routine, but heartbroken at the same time. then again, maybe they aren't married. maybe they're just in a relationship or engaged. lol i really can't decide. it all follows the same theme though, regardless of the specifics.
in brief, i'd say it's about a marriage that's coming to a bitter end. read through the lyrics and i'm sure you can piece it together.
or i could be completely off the mark.
i should finish thinking before i finish commenting. now i'm actually thinking it's either about an engagement that never came to pass, or an engagement that they're going to go through with even though they know the relationship isn't working out. explains the title and the lyrics.
but again, i could be completely wrong.
matty-182, that's a really intelligent analysis, I reckon. I hadn't actually seen it that way before, but having read that I'm leaning more towards marriage than engagement...cause church tongue = the things you say in church, like wedding vows? maybe?
Awesome song, from one of the records of the year
In concert, Aled mentioned that the song was dedicated to Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore. I don't know if he was joking, but the name 'Church Tongue' may relate to Drew's character's want for a "Church Kiss" in her wedding during 'The Wedding Singer". A lot makes sense as well, he likes her but just doesn't like the fact that she's got what he considers perfect and how his life isn't exactly tip top.
