Virginia Lyrics

Talking to the old man
He says I done screwed up big
Tell me what I don't know
Tell me how to fix it

I been down
I got three babies in the phone book
Yeah, they're looking good
But it makes no difference
I been there just about twenty-five times
And I seem to recall
That it makes no difference

My mouth is hungry
My chest is empty
I miss Virginia
But do I really
Cause I remember darkness coming into me there
Trouble breathing even in the fresh air

Talking to my good friend
I don't know how he puts up with
Listening to my milksop
And still he stays my good friend

I lay down
Avoiding looking over at the clock
Is it 3:00 or 3:15?
Does it make a difference?
Cause I been here just about twenty-five times
And I seem to recall
That it makes no difference

My mouth is hungry
My chest is empty
I miss Virginia
But do I really
Cause I remember darkness coming into me there
Trouble breathing even in the fresh air

There ain't nobody there
And there ain't nobody here
There ain't nobody there
And there ain't nobody here

Talking to the old man
He says I done screwed up big

Well I look down
And I got no money for a few days
Tried to work a lot
But it made no difference
Well I been here just about twenty-five years
And I seem to recall that there ain't much difference

My mouth is hungry
My chest is empty
I miss Virginia
But do I really
Cause I remember darkness coming into me there
Trouble breathing even in the fresh air

Cover art for Virginia lyrics by Chris Merritt

Chris Merritt grew up in Upperville and Purcellville Virginia.

He and his band Paperface moved to CA to try and make it big (they were already getting HUGE in northern Virginia and DC), but when they moved out there the band fell apart. Twice. Chris eventually came to hate it out there.

In this one what gets me (perhaps having gone to high school in Charlottesville) is: I miss Virginia But do I really Cause I remember darkness coming into me there Trouble breathing even in the fresh air

I love the honesty of many of Chris's lyrical moments. Here he makes a rather hackneyed claim, "I miss the place," then pulls up short and reconsiders: "Do I really?" Honest and complex like life.
