The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.

Its scary how much it pertains to what has happened to me in the past month or two. I was stupid and had a thing with a best friends ex. Well long story short she wanted him back, and he didnt want her back. So she tried to make things right with me. But nah not going to have any of that now.

-He though things were going good, but things just got progressively worse. She would avoid talking about the subject but it would have been easier if she had just been straight with him and told him that there was nothing anymore between the two of them.

-The girl is trying to act like she cares about him and trying to convince him that she still likes him, but he realizes that shes being fake and he can see right through her.

-I had to break these lines up because they are each significant and have their own meaning. This line shows that there was another guy that the girl was with behind his back. But she didnt know that he knew about him.

-In this line, he is saying that he still felt something for her, but she was the one that gave up on the two of them having something. But he is expecting her to put all of the blame on him, shedding any responsibility that she had in making the relationship go south.
