Without Permission Lyrics
Oh, well I just don't know how you could go without permission
Cause, well, if you're not there I just don't care for this omission
Every moment brings me down, when you're not around
But all I'm asking for is come back for just one day
So, where did you go?
And do you now know how to be happy?
See, well it's pretty clear, when you're not near me I am unhappy
Every moment brings me down, when you're not around
But all I'm asking for is come back for just one day
And make it worth the while, just to see your smile
That's all I'm asking for
Oh, I've come to know you had to go without permission
Cause it was how, how I wore you down
And how I dragged you round my sole ambition
Every moment brings me down, when you're not around
But all I'm asking for is come back for just one day
And make it worth the while, just to see your smile
That's all I'm asking for, my dear..
Cause, well, if you're not there I just don't care for this omission
But all I'm asking for is come back for just one day
And do you now know how to be happy?
See, well it's pretty clear, when you're not near me I am unhappy
But all I'm asking for is come back for just one day
And make it worth the while, just to see your smile
That's all I'm asking for
Cause it was how, how I wore you down
And how I dragged you round my sole ambition
But all I'm asking for is come back for just one day
And make it worth the while, just to see your smile
That's all I'm asking for, my dear..

This is such a sad and wonderfull song! At first, he believes his hope in the relationship left him without him wanting to, without his permission. He misses her. She left because she said she didn't know how to be happy with him.Now he wonders if she found out how to be happy. He misses her more. He now sees that his hope left because of him constantly needing it and "dragging it around his sore ambition" that would never come true. He misses her.
Beautiful song, but The National covered it.
It was written/recorded by Caroline Martin. Her version has the same melody but a more sparse approach. Still achingly sad - it really crystallizes the depths that one can find themselves in after being dumped.
This is an amazing song. I always understood he sang "Hope, well I just don't know.." and I kind of interpreted the song according to that. To me it was about the feeling of hope that has left him and about a relationship that has ended. His love has left him and has taken his hope with him.
