Disturbia Lyrics

Bum bum be-dum bum bum be-dum bum
Bum bum be-dum bum bum be-dum bum
Bum bum be-dum bum bum be-dum bum
Bum bum be-dum bum bum be-dum bum

No more gas in the rig
Can't even get it started
Nothing heard, nothing said
Can't even speak about it
All my life on my head
Don't want to think about it
Feels like I'm going insane
Yeah

It's a thief in the night
To come and grab you
It can creep up inside you
And consume you
A disease of the mind
It can control you
It's too close for comfort

Throw on your break lights
We're in the city of wonder
Ain't gonna play nice
Watch out, you might just go under
Better think twice
Your train of thought will be altered
So if you must falter be wise
Your mind is in Disturbia
It's like the darkness is the light
Disturbia
Am I scaring you tonight
Your mind is in Disturbia
Ain't used to what you like
Disturbia
Disturbia

Bum bum be-dum bum bum be-dum bum
Bum bum be-dum bum bum be-dum bum
Bum bum be-dum bum bum be-dum bum
Bum bum be-dum bum bum be-dum bum

Faded pictures on the wall
It's like they talkin' to me
Disconnectin' your call
Your phone don't even ring
I gotta get out
Or figure this shit out
It's too close for comfort

It's a thief in the night
To come and grab you
It can creep up inside you
And consume you
A disease of the mind
It can control you
I feel like a monster

Throw on your break lights
We're in the city of wonder
Ain't gonna play nice
Watch out, you might just go under
Better think twice
Your train of thought will be altered
So if you must falter be wise
Your mind is in Disturbia
It's like the darkness is the light
Disturbia
Am I scaring you tonight
Your mind is in Disturbia
Ain't used to what you like
Disturbia
Disturbia

Bum bum be-dum bum bum be-dum bum
Bum bum be-dum bum bum be-dum bum
Bum bum be-dum bum bum be-dum bum
Bum bum be-dum bum bum be-dum bum

Release me from this curse I'm in
I've been trying to maintain
But I'm struggling
You can't go, go, go
I think I'm going to oh, oh, oh

Throw on your break lights
We're in the city of wonder
Ain't gonna play nice
Watch out, you might just go under
Better think twice
Your train of thought will be altered
So if you must falter be wise
Your mind is in Disturbia
It's like the darkness is the light
Disturbia
Am I scaring you tonight
Your mind is in Disturbia
Ain't used to what you like
Disturbia
Disturbia

Bum bum be-dum bum bum be-dum bum

I think it's a warning to those who want to be in the entertainment business, that things can make you change: "It's a thief in the night, to come and grab you"

and the good things(fame) aren't what they seem: "It's like the darkness is the light".

And also about not letting yourself change: "Watch out, you might just go under Better think twice Your train of thought will be altered So if you must faulter be wise "

And she sings about being careful, to turn on the break: "Throw on your break lights, it's the city of wonder" And the city of wonder might mean Hollywood..

That's what I think anyway, but I think this song has many meanings, and it means different things to different people..

I agree with you! And....I admittedly clicked the _ when i meant to click the +....so your rating should be +1....sorry haha

its about the illuminati....shes in it!!! look it up--->shes krying for help

@shopaholic you’re correct. She’s warning others by describing what it’s like when you go manic. A few things can cause it, but it does 100% alter your mind. It can seem good until all of a sudden it’s not.

Interesting opinions about the meaning. I personally see it (because of the video) that one of the meanings of the song is related to the deep, dark thoughts and fears in the recesses of our minds. Those disturbing thoughts that can creep up out of seemingly nowhere and really torment a person; in extreme cases to taking reckless or dangerous actions. Mostly though we all have such thoughts that might come up in the nights for example and rob us of our peace and comfort. Taking it all more metaphorically it's about both possession and also controlling oneself. It's about those disturbing ideas that we think we'd like to act upon, and also about rational and irrational fears that possess us.

To me this song represents being controlled or dangerously obsessed by something. I feel this way with my storylines, since I'm a writer. Most of them are horrors and when I get an idea, I feel trapped and suffocated in my mind for however long I keep the story going. Sometimes the feeling never leaves. I'm pretty much a wreck by now, haha, and most of the time my mind is just in a controlled and disturbed state.

Which is why I really like this song. It means a lot to me.

I think it's about a break up. She's upset & can't stop thinking about it.

"Faded pictures on the wall It's like they talkin' to me Disconnectin' your call Your phone don't even ring I gotta get out Or figure this shit out It's too close for comfort "

"Release me from this curse I'm trying to remain tame But I'm struggling You can't go, go, go I think I'm going to oh, oh, oh"

my take on this song is kinda different..

"What's wrong with me? Why do I feel like this? I'm going crazy now" ^ she took some sort of drug. lol. seriously.

"No more gas in the rig Can't even get it started" ^ she wants to escape or stop from what shes doing, but she cant. her 'car' cant start because it has no gas.

"Nothing heard, nothing said Can't even speak about it" ^ she doesn't tell anybody and no one asks her about it all

"Out my life out my head Don't want to think about it Feels like I'm going insane" ^ going crazy because its making her something she doesnt want to be

"It's a thief in the night To come and grab you" ^ the 'addiction' will unexpectadly take hold and doesn't give you a chance

"It can creep up inside you And consume you A disease of the mind It can control you It's too close for comfort" ^ pretty self explanatory with what i'm going on about

"Put on your BRAKE lights We're in the city of wonder" ^ shes trying to enjoy herself now (while on the drug). you BRAKE with your CAR BRAKES in a city to either slow down or enjoy the scenary. i hate that all these lyrics have the misspelling.

"Ain't gonna play nice Watch out, you might just go under" ^ you could get carried away in the other world

"Better think twice Your train of thought will be altered" ^ don't lose yourself in the experience or else you'll change who you are

"So if you must faulter be wise Your mind is in disturbia" ^ be careful, but if its too late, you're in disturbia..

"It's like the darkness is the light" ^ things obviously aren't normal if darkness is the light..

"Am I scaring you tonight Ain't used to what you like" ^ almost PROVING this is not about your normal relationship or depression. its something more, of course you don't want to hear its about a drug addiction or abuse

"Faded pictures on the wall It's like they talkin' to me" ^ tripping out lol pictures on the wall talking to you? come on.. gotta be..

"Disconnectin' phone calls The phone don't even ring I gotta get out Or figure this shit out It's too close for comfort" ^ she cannot call anyone or get any help from anyone she knows, shes stuck where she is and has to help herself..

I feel like a monster ^ she feels like something she doesn't want to be.. not herself at all

"Release me from this curse I'm in Trying to remain tame But I'm struggling" ^ crying out for help for the last time, she cant do it on her own

"If you can go, go, go" ^ saying to get away while you still can, without losing yourself

"I think I'm going to oh, oh, oh" ^ she knows that she's going to lose it now.. hence going to the "brake lights part"

yup. think outside the box people. depression and relationships? come on. lol.. just joking.

@jobro From all the meaning explainations I've read by now (which I really enjoyed), I think this must be what the song really means! You seem to be right about the "misspelling words", since the song makes A LOT more sense this way. It explains everything! It's so satisfying to see various meanings of one song though, so then you can listen to it in many cases as it can fit in many situations. Oh, I think this one also explains the "Bum bum be-dum bum bum be-dum bum" which pictures her being a senselessly delirious, if that makes any...

Sorry this is long. It's worth reading. I promise you. I'm SURE this is it. Sleep paralysis. You guys have suggested insanity/panic attack. Sleep paralysis is when the mind is half asleep and half awake. You can see all the dream image but you are still awake. Here, I'll explain my view of the lyrics- Bum bum be-dum bum bum be-dum bum (What's wrong with me?) Bum bum be-dum bum bum be-dum bum (Why do I feel like this?) Bum bum be-dum bum bum be-dum bum (I'm going crazy now) Bum bum be-dum bum bum be-dum bum

No more gas in the rig Can't even get it started(You can't move at all in sleep paralysis, SP from now on. Your body is completely paralyzed.) Nothing heard, nothing said Can't even speak about it(Because you can't move in SP you can't speak. Your mind may also block out noises so you don't hear any 'real' sounds.) All my life on my head Don't want to think about it Feels like I'm going insane(After SP you feel crazy and whatnot, wondering why all this happened.) Yeah

It's a thief in the night To come and grab you(This is what got me. Most people report a presence in the room. It's mostly evil. To some people it's the grim reaper or devils, to others it's thieves/rapists/murderers) It can creep up inside you And consume you A disease of the mind It can control you It's too close for comfort(It's really creepy. And I mean REALLY F**&EN CREEPY)

Throw on your break lights We're in the city of wonder Ain't gonna play nice(You can hallucinate during it, hence, city of wonder.) Watch out, you might just go under(I might just be thinking too literally here, but some people also report feeling like they're being pulled under their bed.) Better think twice Your train of thought will be altered So if you must faulter be wise Your mind is in disturbia(AKA, SP :P) It's like the darkness is the light(you may hallucinate as if it was light) Disturbia Am I scaring you tonight(and she scared the s#*t outta me.) Your mind is in disturbia Ain't used to what you like Disturbia Disturbia

Bum bum be-dum bum bum be-dum bum Bum bum be-dum bum bum be-dum bum Bum bum be-dum bum bum be-dum bum Bum bum be-dum bum bum be-dum bum

Faded pictures on the wall It's like they talkin' to me(Every time I went into SP there where 'faded' pictures on every surface.) Disconnectin' your call Your phone don't even ring I gotta get out Or figure this shit out(If it happens to you trust you WILL want out.) It's too close for comfort

Release me from this curse I'm trying to remain tame But I'm struggling(SP is often described as though something has put a curse on you so you can't move. Waiting through it doing nothing is how to get through it, though every time it has happened to me I ended up struggling like all hell to get out)

The first time I heard this song was on the same day I had another bout of SP. I was staying up listening to music cus I was scared to go to sleep. It really did scare the living cr#p outta me. Enough to make an account here just to post this. I'm not gonna sleep tonight :P

This is probably a risky place to go, but I think that of anything serious... this song could be the mentality of someone who is sexually abused. Not only does the phrasing fit, but there are some overt sexual themes in the video- the person tided down, bouncing on her hands and knees, the fact that Rhianna runs her fingers over her red lips in a very sexual way, even down to the scene with her and the manniquin man. There's even a metaphorical reference to urges, in that when she is on the stake her arms are bound behind her and she is collared to the pole.

Lyric Explaination

"What's wrong with me? Why do I feel like this? I'm going crazy now"

++Someone who is abused may be abused by someone who they care for. Sexually abused tend to believe that this wrongness has happened to them because of something they have done or because they are "messed up" somehow.

"No more gas in the rig Can't even get it started Nothing heard, nothing said Can't even speak about it All my life on my head Don't want to think about it Feels like I'm going insane Yeah"

++They feel trapped, as if there is no way out. They can't even muster up the energy to defend themselves anymore- they "can't even speak about it" because it feels to shameful to discuss it with family or friends. Obviously they wouldn't want to think about it because it is painful, and because everything is pent up inside, they feel torn and confused.

"It's a thief in the night To come and grab you It can creep up inside you And consume you A disease of the mind It can control you It's too close for comfort "

++ The memories of being abused can hit anyone who has been like a ton of bricks, by any trigger that is associated with the experience. It comes when you can't see it, when you are supposed to be calm and collected and shocks you. The feelings are harsh- and the guilt of having been abused could easily be described as consuming. Sexual abuse is a disease of the mind, because it breaks someone down mentally, causing their relationships in all areas of life to suffer.

"Throw on your break lights We're in the city of wonder Ain't gonna play nice Watch out, you might just go under Better think twice Your train of thought will be altered So if you must falter be wise Your mind is in disturbia It's like the darkness is the light Disturbia Am I scaring you tonight Your mind is in disturbia Ain't used to what you like Disturbia Disturbia"

++This part seems to relate to a current relationship- someone who freaks out due to a memory flash my become violent, uncontrollable, skiddish, loud, they my cry, scream or a number of other things. The line of "better think twice" relates to controlling the thoughts, making sure that the person doesn't assume the current relationship isn't the same as the traumatic experience. "If you must falter be wise" references the need to not hurt others even though the person may be in pain. Obviously "Am I scaring you tonight" is a question that the person wonders once they have calmed- an abused person can easily drive away others due to their unresolved issues, and they wonder if this person is going to leave them because they are "broken". This is the kind of person that people would normally be attracted to, and would come as a very big surprise if someone didn't tell their partner before an attack.

"Faded pictures on the wall It's like they talkin' to me Disconnectin' your call Your phone don't even ring I gotta get out Or figure this shit out It's too close for comfort"

++Faded pictures refer to memories, and that they are constantly telling the person that they are broken, horrible, or unwanted. "Disconnectin' you call, your phone don't even ring" means they can't communicate their feelings to the other person. There is again the feeling of trappedness, they need room to breath so they need to leave and have time to think over the relationship.

"Release me from this curse I'm trying to remain tame But I'm struggling You can't go, go, go I think I'm going to oh, oh, oh"

++The person wants release from the mental anguish that is sexual abuse. They try to control it, but they can only do so much. They want and need someone to support them, but constantly run or drive people away, making them feel as if they are alone.

This explanation fits the whole song, instead of just parts like other explanations (thought I have liked them all thus far). It seems with what they had chosen for the video's content, lyrics, and personal experience, this is the best explanation I could see.

...This is sometimes how it feels to be bipolar 1. At least from my personal experience. Even with mood stabilizing meds, the breakthrough gives this emotional state of mind. It is a very unsettling.. aggitated, insane, paranoid, distorted, and are very confusing emotions to experience. Reality becomes something extremely distant and almost unobtainable. And yes, it would be interesting to hear the insight of the artist.

When I first heard it, that is exactly what I thought. I also struggle with bipolar disorder and when you are out of control, this is what it feels like. Only people who have bipolar disorder can understand what its like and I related to the song in that way as well.

I'd like to know if Rihanna wrote the song or if someone else wrote it and what their intention was myself. I truly think that a person that goes through this wrote it because I can't see how anyone could be so in depth with what happens to...

I think it's about the apocalypse.

"for you know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night." - 1 Thessalonians 5:2

"God is a consuming fire." - Hebrews 12:29

"For this reason God sends them a powerful delusion so that they will believe the lie and so that all will be condemned who have not believed the truth but have delighted in wickedness." - 2 Thessalonians 2:11-12

close..but no!! she is in the illuminati and shes trying to brake free: "Release me from this curse I'm trying to remain tame But I'm struggling You can't go, go, go I think I'm going to oh, oh, oh"

shes warning you about it: "It's a thief in the night To come and grab you It can creep up inside you And consume you A disease of the mind It can control you"

they try to control everybody ..... shes kant talk about it so she uses symbolism: "nothing heard, nothing said cant even speak about it"...

I agree with the Illuminati meaning that's what i got from all the lyrics and listening to the song! That stuff is real and scary!

Well I am trying to get out of a relationship with a man who is Bi polar, delusional, seemingly schitzo, and this song fits the situation and my mind frame perfectly.

His obsession with me, and my caring for him which has turned into an obsession, all came out and took over my life, like a thief in the night. My life was turned upside down. He is passionate, intense, paranoid, and downright scary and violent sometimes. The things I have been through in the past week are worse than things I have seen in movies.

It's like a drug, and I am going crazy. I am changing and scaring myself. My mind is in disturbia. The worst part is knowing something must be wrong with me to connect so tightly to someone like him. I am scary, like a monster!

I think the song is about falling in love with a pyschopath, and losing your mind trying to get out.
