I Was a Cloud Lyrics

i was a cloud
i was a cloud looking down;
your frantic waving did not provoke feeling.

but this little one
steady your wings, now, sparrow
i remembered him
steady your wings, now, sparrow

and in the dark,
from the sea marbled and moon-blue
into the burning eye of the sun
without feeling

my end was imminent
steady your course now, sparrow
but i remembered him
fear for your home life, sparrow
fear for your home life.

I think this is my favorite song on the record. Just so melodic and so touching. The hushed "steady your wings now sparrow" gave me chills.

I feel like I'm constantly thinking: The name of this website is song mmmmeanings; but no one really cares I huh. Well Shearwater anyway is a project I think demands immediate analysis. Few songwriters are as cryptic or as pithy.

Such a haunting song. As with all Shearwater songs meanings are crptic, to me it seems like someone remebering the warnings given to them by someone in their past - the sparrow lines, I feel like they're the voice or the advisor. But the character singing the song, they were too much of a free spirit, or too close-minded to listen, and the tone of the song suggests perhaps they are now regretful of this?

Who knows, it's fun hypothesizing though.
