All my deities belong to you
Watching dolphins in the sea
The earth is a pretty place to be
All my deities belong to you

Black bodies float in the sea
We can see but they can't see me
A starless shroud like a dark balloon
Laughter echoes in my private room

Kissing fireflies on the beach
How sweet the day can be
Everyone has love to give
Our hearts will teach us how to live

My body wept, I feel so free
The water softly tickles me
My heart is pounding waiting for
The ocean deep enough to lift my veil

Crystal light, shine down on us
God has a voice, she speaks through me
Every creature longs to be
In his arms please carry me

I'm happy in the light of day
My skin glows bright in the sun rays
My shadowed world seems so far away

My angel told me not to fear
Love is free and everywhere
Listen to that special part
It will save us, it's the heart

God has a voice, he speaks through me
God has a voice, she speaks through me
Crystal light in every creature
Everyone has love to give

The ladies said this regarding the meaning of this song: "The basic subject that has been really heavy on our minds recently has been patriarchy. As old of an issue as that might be, we've hit a new wave of it. Being at the beach in France and seeing women in the water completely covered head to toe in burkas with all their husbands in Speedos, it hit me in such an intense way. It is political for sure, but the message is, at least coming from us, the opening to a discussion. People have a lot of opinions on the subject because people are really uncomfortable addressing it. It's almost like we're not allowed to talk about it. It becomes a cultural issue instead of a women's issue. For us, we're approaching it more as a women's issue. I've been so personally offended by it, in a way, that I'm ready to at least talk about it. I'm not forcing any statements down anybody's throats. It's just opening up some dialog which is all we can ever hope to do."

After reading this the song becomes so clear to me.

    i hear the following:

a starless shroud like dark to you

my heart is pounding waiting for the ocean deep enough to lift my veil

crsytal light shine down on us god has a voice she speaks through me every creature longs to be in his arms please carry me

and i absolutely love this song. and the video, both of which are just beautiful. and bizarre. and inexplicable, like everything they do. i like how hard it is to distinguish who is singing when in this song. and the she/his references to god (ambiguously gendered). i read somewhere this is supposed to be a suicide story full of hope and the idea of returning to mother nature. the new album is supposed to play heavily on opposing dichotomies and continue the oceanic/apocalyptic themes. i'm ready for it to come out already!

Am I the only one who thinks that this song isn't necessarily saying that God is female? Me, I think it's a feminist commentary on religion's mistreatment of women (EXTREMIST religion, of course), and that it's actually saying "The only 'god' is me. I control my own existence and make my own choices, therefore I am my own god", and the "she" is there because it is told through a woman's point of view.

It tells a story about Muslim women on a beach. Even though they're at a beach, they're covered head to toe, wearing burqa/niqab. "Black bodies float in the sea" refers to the women wearing their black veils in the water. They can see everyone around them, but nobody can see them under their veils. ("We can see, but he can't see me")

"Kissing fireflies on the beach. How sweet that we can be! Everyone has love to give. Hearts will teach us how to live."

This verse tells that while at the beach, they discover the beauty of nature and see that all life is beautiful and meaningful.

The next verse illustrates one of the women going into the deep end of the water, and how the water lifts her veil off from her head, thereby showing her both literally and symbolically taking off her veil and coming out of hiding.

Through this moment of enlightenment, it is then that the women realize that the ones who know what is best for them is themselves, hence "God has a voice, she speaks through me", and they decide to free themselves from the bounds of extreme religion and be their own gods.

The next verses describe the joy and freedom that these women feel, having all taken off their veils and becoming one with nature.

That's just my interpretation. But if you read the lyrics and watch the video, it should be obvious what it's about.

What do they say where it says "something something we can be"?

i don't know, everything they have done keeps surprising me even now, and it's strange.. i don't really get the impression of a 'direction', so i don't know what could happen next

Some of these lyrics seem wrong.

"Something something we can be", I hear "How sweet that they can be"

Also there's an "Our" just before "Hearts will teach us how to live" so should be "Our hearts..."

"My fear was so free" should be "I feel so free"

"Crystal light shines through mine eyes" I'm hearing "Crystal light shines down on us" but who knows hard to tell with that one. Origianl lyric may be right.

"Every creature loves to be" pretty sure it's "longs" not love so "Every creature longs to be"

Another that's hard to tell is the end of this "My skin glows bright in the sun breeze" is it just me who thinks it's "suns rays" though could be breeze.

    My Interpretation

I used to think that this song talks about the Goddess, cause speaks about the earth and how beautiful it's and the mother nature, something like a strong power that protect us and protecs every single little thing that is alive, like animals, flowers, the sea... Also the video it's pretty femenine, with one of the girls dressed like a beduin girl, and the other full of flowers and beautiful images around her. Well that's my opinion, The song it's beautiful and produces me a feeling of hope that I can't describe.

Fast Car
Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

Dreamwalker
Silent Planet
I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

When We Were Young
Blink-182
This is a sequel to 2001's "Reckless Abandon", and features the band looking back on their clumsy youth fondly.

No Surprises
Radiohead
Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.

Amazing
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran tells a story of unsuccessfully trying to feel “Amazing.” This track is about the being weighed down by emotional stress despite valiant attempts to find some positivity in the situation. This track was written by Ed Sheeran from the perspective of his friend. From the track, we see this person fall deeper into the negative thoughts and slide further down the path of mental torment with every lyric.
