Versions Of Violence Lyrics
Coercing or leaving
Shutting down and punishing
Running from rooms, defending
Withholding, justifying
These versions of violence
Sometimes subtle sometimes clear
And the ones that go unnoticed
Still leave their Mark once disappeared
Diagnosing, analyzing
Unsolicited advice
Explaning and controlling,
Judging opining and meddling
These versions of violence
Sometimes subtle sometimes clear
And the ones that go unnoticed
Still leave their Mark once disappeared
This labeling
This pointing
This sensitive’s unraveling
This Sting I’ve been ignoring
I feel it way down way down
These versions of violence
Sometimes subtle sometimes clear
And the ones that go unnoticed
Still leave their Mark once disappeared
Shutting down and punishing
Running from rooms, defending
Withholding, justifying
Sometimes subtle sometimes clear
And the ones that go unnoticed
Still leave their Mark once disappeared
Unsolicited advice
Explaning and controlling,
Judging opining and meddling
Sometimes subtle sometimes clear
And the ones that go unnoticed
Still leave their Mark once disappeared
This pointing
This sensitive’s unraveling
This Sting I’ve been ignoring
I feel it way down way down
Sometimes subtle sometimes clear
And the ones that go unnoticed
Still leave their Mark once disappeared

I think it's about an emotionally abusive relationship. I don't think it's physical because it says "Sometimes subtle sometimes clear And the ones that go unnoticed Still leave their Mark once disappeared ".
Emotional abuse can leave it's own "scar".
I agree that is about abuses of the emotional kind...however, I think it's more about the abuse Alanis puts herself through. Another PHENOMENAL song (musically and lyrically) from Alanis...
I agree, a completely phemonal song. I think it's about how emotional abuse is overlooked because a, it's not always quite visible, and b, others view as not as harmful, though it can be a lot more painful than physical abuse.
indeed i agree. the effects of emotional violence can be far greater.
the best alanis has done in a while!!!
