Straitjacket Lyrics

Something so benign for construed as cruelty
Such a difference between who I am and who you see

Conclusions you come to of me routinely incorrect
I don’t know who you’re talking to with such f**king disrespect

This shit’s making me crazy
The way you nullify what’s in my head
You say one thing do another
And argue that’s not what you did
Your way’s making me mental
How you filter as skewed interpret
I swear you won’t be happy til
I am bound in a straitjacket

Talking with you’s like talking to a sieve that can’t hear me
You fight me tooth and nail to disavow what’s happening

Your resistance to a mirror I feel screaming from your body
One day I’ll introduce myself and you’ll see you’ve not yet met me

This shit’s making me crazy
The way you nullify what’s in my head
You say one thing do another
And argue that’s not what you did
Your way’s making me mental
How you filter as skewed interpret
I swear you won’t be happy til
I am bound in a straitjacket

Grand dissonance
The strings of my puppet are cut
The end of an era
Your discrediting’s lost my consent

This shit’s making me crazy
The way you nullify what’s in my head
You say one thing do another
And argue that’s not what you did
Your way’s making me mental
How you filter as skewed interpret
I swear you won’t be happy til
I am bound in a straitjacket

hee hee "shes swearing again" thats funny. so i personally think that it may be speaking on religous people. like around here anyway, you see christian people... not to group all of them together becuase its not just christians... saying to do one thing but do another. and when you call them out they deny it. they don't listen to you when you try to talk. when i talk to my parents, they are impossible. they think they are right and i can do nothing to change their mind. i love this cd!

i don't think it has anything to do with religion, simply a bad relationship where the partner doesn't listen and completely goes against her for no reason other than to prove himself better than her.

i can totally relate, and i too wonder if it's about ryan reynolds - it's funny if it is.

@firejdl the album was written in realtime(after her break with Ryan) so chances are it is about Ryan.

Upon first listen to this song, I both realized: from 12 years ago when the hardcore Alanis fans on her mailing list were ecstatic about "shit" and "fuck" songs selling so well, :: then we get Straitjacket that delivers in the first 45 seconds alone! I identify with this song, and when my lyrics for Tapes are submitted, I'll comment on those as well. I've waited so many years for a record of this magnitude and finally got it. I love it when artists pursue their personal goals in their music- it makes for better music in the end, instead of just selling out (which Alanis will never do.) As for the lyrics, it seems to me from the point of view of the lyrics and how she addresses it in her usual manner, it's relationship-related. Or at least a close-friend.

This is one of my most fave songs! I feel its about being miss understood and someone miss reading someone doing good and twisting in there head as a wrong or bad a thing. I also feel its her way of setting herself free from a realationship(Ryan)that broke her heart, and is moving on even though it was left with a misunderstanding or misintupitaion of who she really is inside and this song is her way getting the last word and tossing it thier face.
