Before The Worst Lyrics
It’s been a while since the two of us talked
About a week since the day that you walked
Knowing things would never be the same
With your empty heart and mine full of pain
So explain to me, how it came to this
Let’s take it back to the night we kissed
It was Dublin city on a Friday night
You were vodkas and coke, I was guinness all night
We were sitting with our backs against the world
Saying things that we thought but never heard
Who would have thought it would end up like this?
But everything we talked about is gone
And the only chance we have of moving on
Was trying to take it back before it all went wrong
Before the worst
Before we met
Before our hearts decided it’s time to love again
Before too late
Before too long
Let’s try and take it back before it all went wrong
There was a time that we’d stay up all night
Best friends, yeah, talking til the daylight
Took the joys alongside the pain
With not much to lose but so much to gain
Are you hearing me? Cuz I don’t wanna miss
That you would drift on memory bliss
It was Grafton street, on a rainy night
I was down on one knee and you were mine for life
We were thinking we would never be apart
With your name tattooed across my heart
Who would have thought it would end up like this?
But everything we talked about is gone
And the only chance we have of moving on
Was trying to take it back before it all went wrong
Before the worst
Before we met
Before our hearts decided it’s time to love again
Before too late
Before too long
Let’s try and take it back before it all went wrong
About a week since the day that you walked
Knowing things would never be the same
With your empty heart and mine full of pain
Let’s take it back to the night we kissed
It was Dublin city on a Friday night
You were vodkas and coke, I was guinness all night
Saying things that we thought but never heard
Who would have thought it would end up like this?

Before we met
Before our hearts decided it’s time to love again
Before too late
Before too long
Let’s try and take it back before it all went wrong
Best friends, yeah, talking til the daylight
Took the joys alongside the pain

This is about a guy one week after a break-up, trying to cope with the loss of a girl (his fiancée). He is replaying in his head the moments in their relationship when it seemed that they were destined to be together, at a time when it was unforeseeable that they could "end up like this", and he is trying to find out where it went wrong, and wishing that could go back to that point with her and take back all the things that eventually lead them down the path to the end of their relationship.
He is talking to her in his head and trying to come up with answers - "are you hearing me?" And toward the end of the song, he seems to be imploring her to give it another chance by taking back the things that they did to hurt each other. This is a guy who is desperately holding on to hope that he can repair things: "if the clouds don't clear then we'll rise above it", which is to me a form of bargaining (one of the stages of grief). Throughout the song he is trying to remind her of all of the sweet moment in their relationship when their future was full of promise, in the hopes that he can draw her back in to give it another try.
It is basically a song about regret and loss, and someone who is trying to come to terms with those things. His method of coping is to grasp at the hope of changing the past rather than looking forward to the future. And he is allowing himself to wallow in what are now bittersweet memories of past happiness.
I feel like there should be a sequel to this song, about two months into the break-up, when he has moved on, regained his equilibrium, and sees that they probably made the right choice by moving on. Obviously this has happened to me...
My goal in life: Propose on Grafton Street on a rainy night
I just love visualizing them in Dublin with the 2 situations of their first kiss and then him asking her to marry him. I do know that this is a song about break up, but there is still amazing beauty & romance throughout it... my favorite by far from The Script.
I freakin' love this song, fits the past couple months of my life perfectly.
However, it appears that some of the lyrics are missing.
After that last verse listed up there:
"If the clouds don't clear Then we'll rise above it, we'll rise above it Heaven's Gate is so near, come walk with me through Just like we used to, just like we used to
Let's take it back before it all went wrong
Before the worst Before we met Before our hearts decided it's time to love again Before too late Before too long Let's try and take it back before it all went wrong"
it's "you were vodkas and coke, i was guinness all night" great song
i am hooked on these guys..breath of fresh air..ths is my fav song on ths album, could listen to it ten times straight.. he basically saying lets take back evey bad thing we did to eachother and try to maybe be friends..before they reach th point of no return..love it
Gunner-chica. They are a breath of fresh air! When I heard We Cry and The Man Who Can't Be Moved, I thought catchy songs, I'll give the album a go. I was just blown away when I heard the other tracks on the album. This band for me are like old school Coldplay, with not so 'lullaby, put me to sleep' songs! This band have the most AMAZING lyrics, and they're Irish which is always a plus with me!
I agree with you vintage, THE best lyrics in this song are: "Let’s take it back to the night we kissed It was Dublin city on a Friday night You were vodkas and coke, I was guinness all night"
That for me explains how we look back on either current or past relationships, on the day(s) we first met. Those lines are completely wistful! I both love and hate that feeling at the same time!
I don't know when this band is going to get old for me, my iPod shows that I've listened to some tracks at least 100 times! I can't say anymore really!
Felq, I believe what they mean is that it has been about a week since they walked away. Away from the relationship, the situation....
I happen to love this song (and The Script). They are simply amazing. I love every line in this song, but I think I'd have to say my favorites are: "We were sitting with our backs against the world Saying things that we thought but never heard" and "There was a time that we’d stay up all night Best friends, yeah, talking til the daylight Took the joys alongside the pain With not much to lose but so much to gain"
I believe in the chorus the words are "Before the worst. Before we mend." Instead of "Before we met." And instead of "That you would drift on memory bliss" it's "Set you adrift on memory bliss"
Sorry. That was my musical OCD right there.
To me this song means a lot because it's practically the story of my last relationship. I love the Script. My mom and I saw them on a trip to Ireland. They were amazing!
This was the second song I'd heard by them (after We Cry) and I heard the acoustic version fist.. I absolutely love this song acoustically - it's on Youtube
I'm gonna get kinda picky.. "But everything we talked about is gone" I think it's "Where everything we talked about is gone" .. it would make sense as the line before it asks "Who would have thought it would end up like this" and then goes on to explain what "this" is
I really hope The Script is recognized for their music.. it's amazing!!
Firstly, a few corrections to the lyrics in the chorus:
"Before the worst Before we mend Before our hearts decide it's time to love again Before too late Before too long Let's try and take it back before it all went wrong"
This song is about the lead singer trying to salvage a relationship after she walked out on him. He's reliving all the good times and hoping to get her back.
