Madeline Lyrics

There's a girl back home I used to know,
who cried herself to sleep every night.
we all knew.
we all knew.

The only girl who would ever compromise,
strike a deal with the devil to save a night.
we all knew.
we all knew.

She tried to call me a month ago,
to sing me a song that she just wrote.
but I wasn't home,
I should've known that time had taken its toll.
she had no place to go,
they found her body,
resting by the river.

I never said goodbye.
I wish I would have tried.
I couldn't hear her cries, as she filled her veins with lies,
until she saw the light.

I remember we would hide behind the trees,
smoking cigarettes until our throats would bleed.
Those were the days.
Those were the days.

Never scared, never worried that the summer would end.
Invincible to every short bend.
We drove so fast,
thought it would last.
but time had taken had taken its toll,
she had no place to go.
They found her body resting by the river.

I never said goodbye.
I wish I would have tried.
I couldn't hear her cries, as she filled her veins with lies,
until she saw the light.

Madeline.
Madeline.
You will be remembered.
Madeline.
Madeline.
We still have September.
Madeline.
Madeline.
We'll see you on the other side.

If I could turn back time,
I'd find a way to remind you
that somehow you could try to give in and fight the good fight
oh you didn't have to die,
you filled your veins with lies,
My Precious Madeline.

I love this song. I think what it means is that, there's a girl, and she's depressed. So she takes drugs, "She filled her veins with lies, until she saw the light." She had an overdose, and died, and whoever she was with didn't know what to do, so they dumped her body by a river.

But it alos says "Never scared, never worried that the summer would end. Invincible to every short bend. We drove so fast, thought it would last. But time had taken its toll, she had no place to go." They were being reckless, and the drugs were kicking in after all the time of messing around, went to a bend in the road and didn't veer off in the direction that they were suppose to and went over some edge.

So i'm not sure what exactly, thats just what I'm thinking. I'm not saying that's right, that's just what I've come to think it might mean listening to the song so many times.

I think this song is obviously about a girl who killed herself but more specifically how he didn't reach out to help her. It repeats "we all knew, we all knew" like they knew something was wrong but its hard to deal with someone you care about going through depression and not knowing how to help them. Her calling and singing a song was like her finally spilling out her feeling and stuff but he didn't help her out. The body resting by the river is like she wasn't able to hold up to life and depressions current and got carried away. Filling her veins with light, drugs and cutting. Both of them lived too fast without treasuring life and the fast pace got the best of her. He wishes he could go back and make things right and prove to her she can get through it..

I love this song. So deep. It almost makes me cry, especially around this part:

"but time had taken had taken its toll, she had no place to go. They found her body resting by the river.

I never said goodbye. I wish I would have tried. I couldn't hear her cries, as she filled her veins with lies, until she saw the light.

Madeline. Madeline. You will be remembered. Madeline. Madeline. We still have September. Madeline. Madeline. We'll see you on the other side."

To me, what it means is there was a girl he was friends with, and really cared about (Likely named Madeline) who he used to hang with, but she started to become sick and depressed, cutting herself, and believing all these horrible things about herself. Probably some other people involved who hurt her emotionally. She tried calling him(singer/narrator/Sean) but he was away at the time, but she didn't try again. They all knew she was sick and depressed and hurting but never did too much for her. She ended up killing herself down by a river. He regrets this and feels that if he could change one thing, it would be to tell her that she's gonna be okay, and try to help her over come it, and be there for her.

Well I think this is a song about a girl named, clearly Madeline, that one of the band members knew who killed herself by a river and her body was found there. The narrator is very sad and wishes he could turn back time to go and help her, but it's too late and he knows he'll see her again on 'the other side' one day.

Song Meaning

I saw TMP in concert in Tallahassee back in January, and the lead singer said this song was about a girl that the band was friends with back home, and that she had overdosed and died. I can't remember if he said it was a suicide or not, but I think that it was. This song is about the regret of not being there for her when she needed him. He feels partially responsible for what happened to her. He started crying on stage and this was the first time I had ever even heard of them, I was instantly a fan because of this song. It is so sad. It is painfully obvious that even though it was years ago, it still haunts him.

The end of the song,

"Madeline. Madeline. You will be remembered. Madeline. Madeline. We still have September. Madeline. Madeline. We'll see you on the other side.

If I could turn back time, I'd find a way to remind you that somehow you could try to give in and fight the good fight oh you didn't have to die, you filled your veins with lies, My Precious Madeline." Is just so powerful the way he delivers the lyrics. It gives me the goosebumps.
