When I heard this song I imagined that it was a guy singing about how he still likes his girlfriend and she's choosing the wrong guy and she shouldn't be with him, he should be with her.

i just heard this at erbert and gerbert's the other day and i love it! i've been thinking a lot about the lyrics, and this is what i think:
A guy is seriously seeing this girl, and they break up. Her new boyfriend, who is a good friend of Jer's, tells Jer that he's seeing his ex. He's mad because he's told his friend all about her, and the new boyfriend is using all of the things that Jer told him about his girlfriend. The other guy never will know her as well as Jer did. He says that she's lowering her standards, and she's not as special as he thought she was (but he still loves her).
I love this song too. I've seen him live so many times, and he's played this at all the shows. All of your interpretations are really close to the actual thing, but this song isn't about Jer. He wrote it for a friend of his, not his own experience.
